"Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the majority, said the federal government does, indeed, have the authority to go after drug dealers and pass rules for health and safety.

But Oregon's law covers only extremely sick people — those with incurable diseases, whom at least two doctors agree have six months or less to live and are of sound mind."

Good ruling, but the reasoning is flawed. Still too much power invested in the federal government.

I perfer Futurama's "Suicide Booths".

Suicide Booth: You are now dead. Thank you for using Stop and Drop, America's favorite Suicide Booth since 2008.

Bender: "Listen, buddy, I'm in a hurry here. Let's try for a twofer. Hehe."
Suicide Booth: "Please select mode of death. Quick and painless or slow and horrible."
Fry: "Yeah, I'd like to place a collect call?"
Suicide Booth: "You have selected slow and horrible."
Bender: "Great choice!"

Excellent!

The .gov has no business in:

The raising of my children
What my wife/partner/lover and I do in the privacy of our bedroom
My gun closet
My reproductive choices
My wish to end MY life when I choose to

That is all, thankyou.

No way - the mightly govenment actually allowed an individual freedom?

Why was this even a debate (other than in the case of treatable mental illness)?

It's not always "Dr. Death", most of the time it is "Nurse Death".
Morphine is a wonderful drug.

Why in the hell would anyone be against this? What justification could you possibly make for taking away someone's right to choose to end their own life?

Because it's a sin...

(the above was a sarcastic comment)

Because some people find it distasteful that someone should be able to choose to die when they wish, due to a misplaced fear that Doctors will start offing patients who are a pain in the ass. No account is taken that someone who is faced with incomprehensible pain for the short duration of their life might wish to shorten the duration of the agony even further...

It is a win for states rights.  Simple as that.

The only people I know who are against assisted suicide are conservatives.

Whatt about "Best Buddy Death"?

If you haven't been there, you'll never understand.

RIP, Peter.

For many of them, the answer is "yes." Many "conservatives" are just people who prefer the outcomes associated with conservatism and have no particular use for the Constitution or any other set of political principles.

The dissenting opinions have some interesting things:

Scalia, writing the dissent, said that federal officials have the power to regulate the doling out of medicine.

A sad truth to be sure. Blind conservatism is "better" then the socialist democrat alternative, but damned scary.

Happens more than you know

My only concern is that the doctors will not be professional enough and a "God" persona will emerge.

Yes, it does.

And that's a ridiculous concern.

that'll always be a problem, but docs end up thinking they're god anyway. i don't appr of assisted suicide (or unassisted suicide, for that matter) but i'm catholic so it's probably genetic...

my friend's dad was in his last few moments of life and was struggling to hold on and a nurse helped him go with some extra morphine. it helped his family as well.

i'm just not sure we're supposed to greet death with open arms. i think we're supposed to sucker punch him in the throat as often as possible while he drags us away...
