So I work in a gun store (yeah i know).
Just had some #$%&stick across the counter in front of me and the owner reach down and put his dickbeater on his loaded 1911....alarms are now going off. He then proceeds to un-holster it and lay it down on the counter facing us. Safety side down so all I know is the damn hammer is cocked back on a loaded 1911 point at me. Worst part is, he's a cop for a local PD and I know hes been a LEO for over 10 years. CMON man! Why Update So Barn had to go on a call and didn't get to finish his paperwork. Came back 30 mins later and sure enough he had to whip it out again. Politely asked him "please dont un-holster your loaded weapon inside the store please". "no problem" The end |

I am not trying to get shot so I never unholster in a gun store.

This is a conversation you should have probably had with him.

Common sense would say to unload and clear in your vehicle before even going into the store. Put it in a case a walk in with it.
|
|
I would never unholster in a gun store without giving the clerk a heads-up that I'd like to unholster my gun and to make sure he's good with that. I would then immediately clear the weapon while keeping it pointed in a safe direction.
But then I'm not an idiot. Quoted: Common sense would say to unload and clear in your vehicle before even going into the store. Put it in a case a walk in with it. View Quote Or this. |

had a guy shopping for holsters for his Shield but didn't have his gun on him. Wanted to try out holster to see how it handled the weight and looked while carrying. I had my shield on me, but the clerk said if the gun is loaded, I shouldn't unholster. So I complied, and that guy had to shop without the gun.

When I had my LGS put night sights on my Glock, it wasn't super planned. I was carrying the gun, and just asked if he wanted me to go unload it in my car, or if I could do it in the store. He said he didn't care if I did in the store as long as I kept it pointed in a safe direction.
After he put the sights on, I loaded back up and put it back in the holster. |

Worked at a store/ range. Desk was inline with the front door and you could see into the parking lot, but due to the tint it acted liek one way glass so people walking up couldn't see in very well.
Anyways seated, talking to a customer notice a guy in a hoodie up walking towards the door, start fumbling and pulling a gun out out his pocket, without breaking the conversation I stand up, push the customer gently to the side, sit back down while upholstering keeping the gun kind of just out of sight and as the guy starts to opens the door I said something about stopping and thinking what he looks like holding a gun walking into a gunstore in a hoodie or something like that and the dude just stops.... It was all good, just a young guy looking to sell a gun he inherited or whatever. But he was about 15 degrees of that gun coming up of catching some 10mm |

Yeah?!
I went into a local gun shop that has a smith. I had only been in there for about 2-3min talking to the guy about getting my front sight pinned and then all of sudden POP!!! Douche nozzle 1; hands loaded/chambered 1911 to douche nozzle 2 complaining that it wasn't feeding correctly Douche nozzle 2 (behind the counter) never checked the weapon and let the hammer drop.... I just checked myself for holes, shrugged my shoulders & shook my head Long story short, YUP there are some dumbasses out there, heads up! |
|
I always carry different guns and show them to my buddy at the gun store, Most of the time I just hand them to him loaded. If doing more I will unload it before he plays with it.

If I worked in a gun shop I'd be wearing body armor every day.

Last time I was at the gun store as a customer the guy behind the counter un-holstered his (I'm assuming loaded) pistol to compare it with one he was thinking of buying. I don't think he dropped the mag or cleared it either. I just looked at him like , and hoped that nothing would happen. The manager and a co-worker were right there and didn't say anything. It was kind of weird.

I'm not for it in any way, but I understand where some people are coming from when they push for mandatory training for CCW.

I watched a derelict bring in a shotgun to inquire about trading it in. The gun shop employee opened the case and asked if it was unloaded after 5 rounds roll out of the case and onto the floor. The employee opened the bolt and out comes a chambered round, and there was 4 more in the guns mag tube.
I had seen all I had too and left at that point. |

View Quote I did that once, too. I had a paddle holster on, so I just removed the holster and handed the guy the whole deal. he took it in the back, put on the sights, reloaded and holstered it, and handed it back. that same store had a range. I was checking in once and the counter guys got all excited; the outdoor cams showed two dazzling urbanites walking towards the door with guns carried loosely in their hands. They were told they needed to case the guns, and were sold two cheapo cases since they had none. they proceeded to come into the range and start shooting with the guns sideways as fast as they could pull the triggers, and put rounds into the ceiling 10' in front of the line. turns out neither had ever fired a gun before... |

LGS I used to frequent had one of these inside the front door. http://www.weapon-clear.com/
Posted above it was a printed sign which read something like this: "Any weapons which are to be taken out of your holster/ case must be cleared here before being brought to the counter". So simple even a caveman can do it. |

I unholstered to compare to another weapon at my LGS the other day.
I have been in there quite regularly as of late, and I asked nicely for permission. |

View Quote My concern would be someone standing in the distance, out of earshot to your conversation with the clerk, who sees you draw a weapon and then has some knee jerk reaction, possibly involving "going full retard." Unless of course you are a uniformed LEO. |

Yeah. I used to work the gun bar at Academy. I've had customers unholster and clear but they usually say something. I myself have. But I NEVER did it with okaying with staff first. If I knew I was going to, I would clear it before entering the store. |

Gotta have a big red button you hit whenever someone does that, it dumps the last 10 seconds of counter CCTV and loops it on a monitor in front of the store with a sign over it that says something like "Rule 2: Jeff Cooper is not amused".

I witnessed something similar. An older gentleman pulled out a loaded P238 pointed at the clerk and said "can you show me how to unload this?" His face droppped and quickly grabbed his wrist. I looked at him and said "he probably can but doing that is a good way to get him to show you how he unloads his". The clerk laughed, old guy looked at me confused.

Helping out at my buddy's store.
Father and two adult sons come in to look at our extensive line of Sigs , Father was going to buy one for each as a college graduation gift . They knew Sigs ,clearly already owned some but were looking at the different models. Each son had a couple of guns out of the case when one reaches into his pocket , grabs a loaded mag , slams it into the gun and racks the slide . Both the store owner and myself reach for our guns but I am thinking I am going to get shot. Before we get our guns out the second son grabs his brothers hand and gun and lifts it up at the ceiling and is screaming at him "What the fuck are you doing?" Turns out the idiot had brought along a mag loaded with snap caps and wanted to see how well the gun would chamber rounds. The father , both sons , my friend and myself all realised how close the whole stupid move came to gunfire . the second son saved the day. Fucker was so embarrassed all three left and never bought anything or returned. |

What's the big deal? It probably wasn't loaded. Ever been shot or is my sarcasm meter need calibration? I think there is a tiny brass screw on the back. Might need a turn or two. But no I have never been shot. I try real hard to not shoot anyone else, too. |

I am not Tier 1 so I unload my guns outside....facing dirt.
Not in my home. Not in my car. Any stupid discharge will not damage anything and no calls to the sheriff since I can shoot whenever I want where I live. |

My lgs had a negligent discharge just a couple months after they opened.
You can't make this shit up, both employees. "Surveillance footage from the store showed the two men lounging in a lobby area of the store, when both stood up. Browning displayed a knife, followed by Holmes obtaining his personal handgun. The two subjects were wrestling over the loaded gun when they said it unintentionally fired, injuring Browning. The investigation into the incident revealed that both men had consumed alcohol before the incident occurred" |

I use to get soo many rifles/pistols pointed in my face being an armorer. It made me quick as fuck to be able to grab or push a barrel out of my face and a Buttstock back into the face of the owner.
