GF just found a ringworm on the dag, and she of course is freaking out.

I'm at work and she's at home, calling every place in town to schedule an appointment ASAP.

I told her to avoid an emergency clinic, and just find a regular vet's office.

Anyone here have luck with home remedies?  Or should I just have a professional take care of it?

Right as I was typing this post out, the GF informed me that the vet's office told her to leave the dag in the car when checking in at the vet because ringworm is very contagious and we will basically have to scrub the house top to bottom if she's positive.

Can't speak to dogs but my Dad picked it up when he was on Okinawa in the 1960s-- cleared up pretty quick with antibiotics, but was a persistent little bugger and had to be treated two or three times before it finally died-- remember it is a microbe and not an actual worm

Get the meds.

At one point growing up we used to breed coon dogs. Dad also had a bunch of steers.

The steers would lay in the sun, the puppies would wander over and lay on top of them in the sun (pretty hilarious to watch) and then we would play with the puppies.

Guess who all got ringworm right down the line?

Had to treat the steers, the dogs and me and my sister.

It's pretty much Athletes foot but on your body, get the anti-fungal stuff and it will clear right up.

Its one chewable pill and doesnt cost that much. Go to vet with stool sample. Mine gets one every 6 months because she's a killer in her yard.

edit-Im thinking of intestinal worms. Carry on.

Our dog got ringworm last year somehow. Went to the vet, got a topical ointment and new shampoo. Had to give her daily baths and let the soap sit on her for like 10 minutes, then follow up with ointment on each infection.

Cleared up after a week or so.

I'd try home treatment with over the counter antifungals. Try the cheaper store bought treatments and if they don't work and you need something stronger then take your dog to the vet.

ETA: Use antifungal cream with miconazole or clotrimazole in it. Brand names include Micatin, Mycelex, and Tinactin.

It's a fungus.  Over the counter antifungal will usually clear it up.

Yea. I treated mine last year with Walmart anti-fungal stuff and cured it. I sure wouldn't pay a vet to do it on my dog.

i used to get ringworm from time to time. Best way I found to get rid of it was scrub the spot with a paper towel  wet with bleach. I would do it enough that the skin would burn a little.  It would clear it right up.

BTW - T-Gel shampoo (or the generic of it, I'm cheap) works better than the anti-fungal cream for ringworm.

It won't cost much at a good vet. The place I go only charges about 5% over cost for meds, and checkups are cheap.

Might well take the dog in for a check up and get their blood work done while you're in there and get it right out of the way for the year.

This, although they likely already have it.  Stuff is hard to get rid of as well and will require medication and through hygene of bedding and clothing.
