depends on your definition of democracy, if using the socialist one world definition then yes we probably are 13th. |

Yeah well, consider the source. Clive Lindley was a central member of the now-defunct Social Democrat Party of Great Britain, essentially an offshoot of the Labor Party that tried to "move to the center" to challenge the Conservative/Tory Party (think Maggie Thatcher).
Of course, he has a political axe to grind as a liberal Brit. He also has a very special interest in the development of democracies in former Communist countries. While this is somewhat commendable, and not a measure of guilt by association, it does demonstrate that he has a tendency to "look left." |

It is all in the eye of the beholder. We could all stack the criteria to make us #1 and france dead last.
I used to work with a Romanian, who escaped during the mid 80's. He stated that he was freer under Ceauchescu (sp) than here in the USA. As long as you did not challenge the power of the state you could do anything you wished. That was the state that banned typewriters! |

we aren't a democracy
We are a republic. We are governed by laws, not mob rule. Hell, Italy is almost a pure democracy. Ask them how that is working out for them. |

 This map seems pretty reasonable. In fact, looking at the ratings - they are a combination of several facets - the rankings seem pretty reasonable. |

Yeah, those are some up-standing and fact-filled groups there...none of them have any self-serving bones in their bodies! This is kind of like having a dentist tell you to eat more sugar. You know he ain't doing it because you have a sugar deficiency. |

My wife is from there. I think your buddy is talking in jest. Try to by a leagal firearm there. Your friend sees where this country is headding to, and so does my wife.
