I was just reading that Target will still not allow them on their property despite the fact that Target donates millions to gay rights groups.

I never cared for target anyways.

I'm not scrooge.  I'm just not giving money to the bell ringers.  They get a cut of what they collect.   YAY! Let's employ the homeless...

Get a job.

I worked with the American Red Cross on three disasters while I was in Americorps NCCC.
The waste perpetrated by the Red Cross was staggering. I cannot even describe it. It was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen.

I look at it like this...

Red Cross Top Dog Marsha Evans makes $652,000 Salary Per Year
http://enews.tufts.edu/stories/images2001/marshaevanssml.JPG

United Way President Brian Gallagher receives a $375,000 Salary  per year (plus numerous benefits)

Commissioner Todd Bassett of the Salvation Army receives $13,000 Salary per year (Thirteen Thousand) plus housing.

That says everything, right there.
My $$$ goes to the Sal Army without pause.

Where did you get that info? My wife used to do it every year when she was in Rotary. Bell ringers didn't get anythjing.

I think the real question is who f'ing cares?

The Sal Army has intense involvement with the homeless in their communities to begin with.
It isn't like they are going down to day labor and picking up bum bell ringers. The homeless they have ringing the bells are invariably people who they are already helping in some capacity.

If a local chapter is in need of bell ringers and tells some of the homeless who are already sleeping/living at the Sal Army shelter to go out and ring a bell for a few hours and as a byproduct they make a few bucks, I find that to be honest work and have no problem with it.

NO, Because unlike the self serving American Red Cross, they actually are there for the purpose of charity and not for the greater glory of their organization and it's bank account.

I like those bell ringers. They tend to be some pretty nice people. Although, I feel guilty when I go into walmart to spend $50 on ammo, but only give them a dollar.

ETA: Yes, Target sells crap. Also, I miss old Sam Walton.

Some of the reason I DESPISE the red cross, I originally started hating them because that 'good deed' you are doing by donating your blood ends up being sold ($$) to hospitals. I've just seen the red cross as using their non-profit status as an anti-competitive advantage vs. other blood banks. I just got so mad the way they would enlist theese fools to VOLENTEER to get suckers to sign up durring a blood drive knowing full well where the money is going (to the top). That and the rabid way the local chapter of the red cross would absolutly HARASS you for your blood once you donate. I had to call the main office to threaten them with a law suit before they would STOP CALLING ME, and believe me, I would take great pleasure in taking them for every possible cent the court would allow.

about Target:

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=397200 Third post.

As for the bell ringers, mildly annoying, but have seen many people I know from my local community do it. the ones who a just friendly, and out having a good time are fine. The ringers who think it's their personal God-given mission to make every single person give are the annoying ones. I personally never carry cash, so what am I supposed to drop in? Also, if you don't drop in cash, people assume you're being a scrooge but maybe you have mailed in a check, or maybe donated stock. There are many other ways of giving to charities.

so while as a whole they are mildly annoying, the attitude of the individual bell ringer has a lot to do with my current opinion of them. Unfortunately, it seems like they're getting more and more of the bad ones these days.

Who, the Salvation Army, or Tar(ownedbytheFrench)get?

BTW-my mom got backed into by a Salvation Army truck once, driver had no insurance.

I respect the Salvation army and think they do good, but that little incident still rings in my mind.

One of the few I give to without pause. During the bell ringers season I make sure I have some small bills when out shopping and put a little into every bell ringer's pot I pass.

Consistantly the surveys show that the Salvation Army is right around 97% of donated money getting to the needy as opposed to 25 or 50 cents of your dollar in the case of many others (the biggies).

The Salvation Army is just about the best bang for your buck if you want to be charitable.

PS: I've never rang the bell but have done lots of stuff for the K of C.

Edited because I can't type.

absolutely not.  they are a great service organization and a good place to donate to if you are so led and skeptical about others.

plus, they just go with the whole holiday season!

No offense to you of course, but I hate the word "holiday" It is the pc word for people who hate saying Christmas because it might offend atheists, or other non Christians. Fuck them, it's Merry Christmas and always will be to me.

They are actually something I look forward to in during the holidays.  I always drop a buck in the can, even if we are shopping and we hit several stores with them out front.  Even hitting every one I probably don't drop more than $50 total.
