Or do they just carry fewer smart bombs these days?

IIRC the B-52Ds were the ones who carried something like 108 500 or 750lb dumb bombs in what was called the Big Belly mod. Those models got retired and they carry fewer overall and concentrate on smart bombs...

Spooky

The D Model with the Big Belly modification, and pylons, could carry 108 bombs.

The H models (the only ones still flying) carry far less.

Incredible! The BUFF rocks!

However, and I was surprised by this, but the B2 Spirit actually has a higher bomb load: 70,000 vs 80,500 for the B2! Amazing!!!!

It depends on what you consider 'a lot' of bombs.

They can still haul a ton of 'em. Just not as many.

For some serious shock and awe check out the B1B.

Last time I saw them load up ~12 years ago, the Kosovo Conflict I think it was, they loaded up with less, larger, smarter bombs. This was pre - 9/11 though so things might have changed. I'm sure one of the AMMO nerds here can answer more accuratley IYAAYAS.

Back in the era of the original B-52 you needed 100 bombs to make sure you hit 1 house, now...not so much.

They only carry one or two bombs.

They carry a lot more than any aircraft except other dedicated heavy bombers... They carried huge numbers of bombs in the Vietnam era during Arc Light strikes. Could you imagine a 3 ship of B-52Ds laying down 324 750lb bombs anywhere near you? That's over 121 tons of bombs...

Spooky

The B1 is like the unsung hero of Bombers. That thing carries so much payload, it's incredible.

about 3:10 in the vid both the pilot and co-pilot push the big control thingy forward. What the control thingy and why does it take both of them?

I would not call it massive when the B-1B and IIRC even the B-2 carry a larger payload.

Throttles for a takeoff run.

I understand that the B1 could carry more, but was limited by treaty for no external payloads.

I don't think Astan or Libya signed that treaty.

The B2 can only carry around 40-50k lbs of payload.....the B-52 can carry around 70k lbs.

The aircraft carries all its weapons internally and is fitted with two separate weapons bays in the centre of the aircraft. The B-2 has the capacity to carry up to 40,000lb of weapons, including conventional and nuclear weapons, precision-guided munitions, gravity bombs and a range of maritime weapons.

B52:
Armament: Approximately 70,000 pounds (31,500 kilograms) mixed ordnance –– bombs, mines and missiles. (Modified to carry air-launched cruise missiles)

B1B still carries almost double the B-52 payload at 125,000 lbs

It's also common for the pilot not in command to have his hands over the throttles even if he's not touching them.
