I bought one about three weeks ago, it sure does like to destroy hard drives from excessive heat.   I originally had two WD Caviar blue 1tb drives, now I'm on two WD Caviar Black 1tb drives.

The blue drives seemed to run hot and eventually failed within a week of owning them.   The reported temperatures were over 130degreees on drive 2 and 128 degrees on drive 1.   That was with moderate use; if it were heavy I'm sure they would have cooked a lot sooner.

Now I'm having the same issues with the Black drives.   Synology says the temperatures are just fine and not to worry about it.  I beg to differ, I certainly want longer than a few weeks out of a hard drive.

On the Synology forum several members have posted how to edit the scemd.xml file to modify when and how fast the fan runs based on temperatures.   What I can't find is how the hell to edit the file so I can modify the settings.    I do not have a desktop so I'm tied there.   Any suggestions on how to do this before I roast another set of drives?

I'm running DSM 3.0, and the fan seems to blow very lightly.    I have also tried setting it to a 2.5" disk fan speed with minimal improvements.

Haven't run them, but was seriously looking into them.

2 drives in a week sounds like a problem.

I would imagine editing that file might void your warranty, however.

I did some quick looking and it seems you might want to try changing your fan speed back to normal and then doing the following:

http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=22776
http://www.synology.com/support/faq_show.php?lang=enu&q_id=348 Push reset button and hold until Synology DS beeps. Then push reset buton again and hold until DS beeps again a starts reboot. After reboot start up Synology Assistant, find your DS and reinstall firmware. Files on HDD should be untouched.

That I think is if the fan is too loud and to revert back to an old firmware.    I need to speed my fan up.
