Does the hive know of anyone making a buffer tube that is in the 10" to 11" range.
Link Posted: 12/11/2013 12:50:44 PM EDT
Why would someone make such a thing?

overall length rules for ar pistols, if its over 26" total you can put a VFG on it and not have to get a stamp.  And I already have a really nice barrel, and buffer tubes are usually really cheap.

How long is a normal rifle buffer tube?

This may or may not work, but what if you got a longer than normal screw and used it to simply stack up and attach several A2 butt-stock spacers to the back of a rifle tube?

Dude, it's not the length of your tube....

usually 7" or so, That would probably work but I would really feel better about it if it was one piece so that it couldn't be "easily removed", yes I know that you can silver solder and such.

Maybe this will be my first project on my new metal lathe.

If you have a rifled barrel less than 16 inches it has to be an SBR, Pistol, or AOW.  No way around that.  The way the shotgun with a pistol grip is not NFA is they do not go under any of the OAL rules.
Link Posted: 12/11/2013 1:00:49 PM EDT
Why?

A longer tube INTERNALLY would simply result in the carrier key impacting the upper part (above the threads) of the lower receiver and breaking it.   Happens every now and again when someone goofs up and puts a carbine length buffer in a rifle length tube.

if it is over 26" in length and it has a VFG  its a Firearm not a pistol, so please stop spouting bullshit.

I thought about the same thing, but I would think that a flash hider affixed in the normal method could also be "easily removed", and that if they could accept a normal non pin/weld FH to count as part of the OAL, the buffer tube extension rig should count as well.  Maybe get a foam slip on tube cover and pop it over the back end after you put the extensions on and call it good.

Vltor has an A5 7-position tube. Looking around the net I found this for the lengths:

A2: 10 3/4"
SOPMOD/A5: just shy of 12"

Dremel power to eliminate the position notches!

That isn't exactly true.  Over a 26" OAL with a VFG is an AR15 firearm.  It isn't a pistol and it doesn't fall into SBR or AOW.

Do you have a letter stating this?

Would you need a longer spring?

If going to add length, add it to the barrel.

My understanding is that this is only true if the the OAL is over 26" AND the barrel is more than 16".

Law Tactical folder is a good way to add 1.3" to your pistol when you need it and subtract ~7" when you don't

So is the point of this so you can have a short barrel, long buffer tube, and a VFG?   It seems like an awful lot of screwing around for no big difference.  Isn't a 16 carbine about 32" overall?
