I work at a restaurant in the not so greatest part of town, had our share of problems with drunks, idiots and occasional robbery.

These dont really concern me its just the stories about the robber rounding everyone up and executing everyone that scares me.

I use to have a pair of 1911's but sold them (needed money) they were nice.

I decided that I really needed a good semi pistol for carry so went with a used glock 19 for 399.

my glock jams with JHP's so I guess I am stuck with ball till I can get some hi caps from lone wolf

Heres my problem everyone in the military bitches about 9mm FMJ. I started doing some research (firearms tactical/ammo lab) and I definitely see some problems with 9mm FMJ its very pointy so it often produces a very tiny crush cavity. Whereas .45 and .40 have a blunter nose causing much more damage (.40 especially)

so will 9mmFMJ do the job, I carry a goldent saber in the chamber but all the rest are ball.

Buy some Federal EFMJ - it's pretty cheap for a defense round and has a semi-wadcutter bullet to help feeding. I carry them.
Link Posted: 10/15/2004 2:06:36 PM EST
What you are doing is better than nothing.
Correct the problem if you can.
After that the best thing you can do is practice.
But 9mm ball sucks pretty bad.
Practice failure to stop drills.

I wouldnt want to be shot with it.

I carry gold dots in my 9's tho
Link Posted: 10/15/2004 2:14:02 PM EST
You might want to check out Federal EFMJ rounds.

I'm not an expert, but it seems really strange you can't reliably shoot hp's. See your local
gunsmith.

9mm FMJ are pussy rounds...of course, I wouldn't wanna get shot with one...
Link Posted: 10/15/2004 2:29:37 PM EST
18 rounds of hollowpointed love out of my G34is enough for me. I just got 3 new Gen4 mags from CDNN for $20 a piece. I'm sure they'll get G19s soon.

BTW my Glock misfed once, at 6 rounds total through it, on wolf ammo. I've put about 6K through it since without a problem. Only gun that did better were my Ruger autos, which have never had a FTF or fire.

You could look around for some of the old Federal 9BP ammo that is very rounded, and was designed to work in early 9mms. I have a couple boxes laying around that I stashed years ago. Or maybe the Corbon Powerball ammo?
Link Posted: 10/15/2004 2:55:02 PM EST
Others are right, look for JHP's that have a more rounded profile and will feed reliably. Federal 9BP's are great... though I thought that Federal was still making them. Another contender is the Winchester "white box" 115gr. JHP's... they expand OK, and are readily available for cheap at Wal-Mart.

FWIW, this problem may be caused by the followers in your mags... tru the Glock board in the handguns forum for more info.

WTF????

Sell the Glock. If it can't feed HP then you don't want it, period. Buy CZ. Shoot +P JHP 9mm. Be safe.
Link Posted: 10/15/2004 3:01:36 PM EST
I have a glock 19, and Speer Gold Dot's feed fine.

As for whether 9mm JHP's are enough, the answer is maybe.

If you put the bullet where it is supposed to go, then it is good enough.

My brother and I were at the range, shooting glocks. His was a 9mm, mine a .40. Trading guns, the 9 would jam on me often, fine for my brother. Couldn't figure it out, and somebody mentioned to "hold the gun FIRM. limp-wristing will soften the recoil and the blow-back design will not be as effective." I held firm, and it worked. (...but I couldnt hit shit). next time at the range we used different types of ammo, and the +p ammo never jamed even with my limp-wrist. (I need to surf the porn more to "help my wrist" not be on ar15.comSorry for the long story. Try differnt brands of ammo, I recommend Corbon 9mm +p 115gr JHP

Glocks are among the most reliable of autopistols. I'd look into it if you're having problems.

I wouldn't recommend FMJ handgun rounds for self defense. Any port in a storm, but you give up a lot in the switch. IMO, if I had to choose between a .45ACP in 230gr FMJs and 9mm in a good modern JHP, I'd take the 9mm.

I'm biased in favor of the hollow points, I don't care what Chuck Schumer has to say...

When was the last time you heard a debate about the knockdown power of the 45acp or the 10mm????

I think I'll stick with my 10mm's and 45's.

Many good comments.

Glocks shouldn't jam with any factory ammo.

But your question was:

Does 9mm FMJ suck as bad as everyone says?

Answer: No. Many thousands (millions?) of soldiers have been killed good and very dead with 9mm FMJ.

Aim carefully. A good hit with a 9mm FMJ is better than a miss with a .44 magnum JHP.

Take a look at Cor Bon Powerball ammo.

No, it's just that 45acp is better.

you cut his brain stem and it won't matter which one you use.

still, while a 9mm +P JHP may or may not expand, a .45 won't contract....

I agree with you. 9mm FMJ looks bad because theres so many better rounds out there, but in combat theres a lot a dead mo fos due to 9mm FMJ. I'd take it over any .380, 32 acp or .25.
Link Posted: 10/15/2004 4:20:51 PM EST
It's not as good as JHP, but it's far from worthless. Make good hits and everything will be allright. I'd be prepared to make headshots if necessary.

But why live with an unreliable gun? Make it reliable with good ammo, or sell it and get something else.

Yes.

Fix your Glock and go to JHP

I am extreemly surprised about your Glock jaming with JHP. Trade it in for a newer one. Somethings wrong.................Glocks don't jam.

hah, thats a good idea. get a cheap gun and plug the barrel and load it, then give it to hte bad guy and he blows himself up.

Check the mag followers first. Sounds like you may have the bad ones.

If the followers are OK, call Glock. I'm sure they wouldn't want a malfunctioning gun out there. They may fix it for you.

The problem is with the 2183 followers in the Clintonized 10 round mags. Replace them with 9mm3 followers and your problem is fixed. You can call Glock and they will probably send you some newer ones free.

correct, call glock and they will send you 9mm1 followers for free, or you can order 9mm3 followers off the net (somewhere for a buck apiece or something like that, maybe cheaper).

They will feed a lot better but after the first time my glock 19 jammed I never trusted my life to it again and sold it for a SIG P228 which i LOVE

If he's lucky, it's fixed. I have a G-19 that runs perfectly with FMJ, zero jams in over 1000 rds, yet chokes on every JHP I've tried. And this is with 9mm-1 and 9mm-3 followers. 6 mags, and not a one is reliable enough for me to carry. They hang up on the feedramp bottom. Gun is going back to Glock shortly. $40 to ship it. ugh.
Link Posted: 10/17/2004 5:27:12 AM EST
Send it to Glock or get something else. A weapon you can't rely on is not a weapon. Also, do some searches on ammo. Corbon 115 +p is just about the worst choice. Not even close to FBI penetration specs. Stick with Gold Dot or Winchester Ranger. Also, if you can find a good deal on one, you can get a Sig Pro 2009 for right around $400 new and they will feed anything. Heck, you can get a factory referb Sig P226 for $500ish. Also an exceptional weapon. I trust my life to a Sig or HK every day. That's it for me. I've had jamming issues with Glocks, Colts, and Berettas. My Sig's and HK's have never failed, ever.
Link Posted: 10/17/2004 5:51:52 AM EST
First, I would say that there's something wrong with the Glock. I've owned several in 9mm and .45, and I've never had a feeding problem with JHPs, even really wide-mouthed ones. As stated above, it's very likely the mag causing the problem. If you can't work it out on your own, take it to a smith. Do the rounds jam on the feed ramp?

If the Glock can't be fixed for whatever reason, I would switch guns. Ammo selection is the one thing you can do to increase the wounding potential of a caliber dramatically. If ball is all you have, it's certainly better than a sharp stick, but it seems silly not to put a good performing bullet in there.

9mm FMJ, like any handgun round, is in the "wouldn't want to get shot by one, but don't depend on it to stop the bad guy" category. It's just farther down on the list than a good +P JHP.

Having never shot anyone with 9mm ball, I would have to answer that I dont know.

However I suspect a 124Gn .355 bullet at 1200FPS through the brain, spine, or heart wouldnt improve anyones day.

Often.

A close friend of mine was sued when he shot a gunman armed with a rifle. My friends bullets permanantly disabled the gunman, but he survived and sued. My friend was shooting a Glock 21 loaded with Remington 230Gn Golden Sabre JHP.

BTW: Knockdown power doesnt exist in calibers smaller than 25mm

Do as the others have suggested, get it fixed even if it costs you a bit of cash.

If you are short on cash you could find some JSP which might be a little better than FMJ.

But don't go buy some crap brand JSP only some good stuff if it's around.
