http://www.foxnews.com/health/2013/12/12/doctors-find-40-year-old-fetus-inside-elderly-woman/?intcmp=obnetwork

According to a report in the Telegraph, doctors at Bogota’s Tunjuelito Hospital originally thought the woman was suffering from gastro-enteritis – a form of diarrhea.  But when an ultrasound came back negative for the disease, doctors ordered an abdominal X-ray which ultimately located the fetus.

I've heard a number of these weird stories over the years and they always seem to happen in Central or South America. Must be something in the water.

Apparently it was.  Well, close to it, anyway.  Not sure how that happens, but there you go.

"The woman’s condition is the result of a medical phenomenon known as lithopedion, in which a fetus develops – and dies – outside of the uterus in the abdominal cavity."

There's some ones that were in the mom longer than that.  I saw a show about them not too long ago.  They were cutting them open to show a cross section

ectopic pregnancy

Although familiar with the phenomenon, I didn't even think of that, as I associate an ectopic pregnancy with the fallopian tubes. But you're right, it's any pregnancy outside of the uterus, and this woman apparently suffered from a very rare form of it.

This happened when I was young in southern Arkansas.  One of my university profs actually had an abdominal x ray from the patient's file (long before the days of medical privacy concerns).

AN elderly woman with a calcified fetus that had been in her abdomen for years and years.
