Not because of if they won't like it, but more for a security issue. If they know you have 10,000 in guns in yout house and that you work for 8 to 5 everyday, some of them might be inclined to break in.

Just curious what you guys think.

Not so much a gun nut - but more of a reclusive loner with varied interests in guns and chemistry.

i clean my guns on my front porch. i dont like cleaning them inside becuase the smell of the chemicals, and the porch makes a good spot becuase there are ledges all arounf that i can set my stuff on. So if they pay any attention to me, i suppose they know i have guns. I am not worried about my neighbors breaking into my home though. Maybe you need a better neighborhood.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 9:42:14 AM EST
I live in a neighborhood with big nice houses and where most of my neighbors don't bother to lock their front doors. Somehow I'm not too worried about people trying to break in to steal my stuff.

Even if someone broke in, they'd have trouble even finding the safe/gun room - and if they did, they'd have a LOT of trouble getting into it.

So I'm not worried. If you had a poll, I'd vote "no"

The sound of gunfire coming from my property might have gave me away

I wonder if they ever notices all the rifle cases I take to my car and back....or perhaps my NRA sticker...I seriously want to know if they know....
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 9:45:21 AM EST

I live in a condo (converted 2 family) and the other lady knows I shoot. Doesn't seem to bother her, but then again, she's never seen anything but a few black plastic cases and bags going in and out..

Yeah, mine usually come over when they see the bbq going and me in the back yard belting away with FA
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 9:46:05 AM EST
That's why I have a safe, an alarm system, two Rottweilers, and a plexiglass front window replacing the original glass that the dogs broke trying to get the last guy who was fucking around in my front yard

Otherwise, unless they see me carrying the gun cases and ammo boxes between the Jeep and the house, they don't know.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 9:47:02 AM EST
I had 'em fooled - until the gunfire started.

[scooby doo]...and I woulda got away with it too, if it weren't fer you meddlin' kids....[/scooby doo]

Link Posted: 10/19/2004 9:47:11 AM EST
I think the frequent sound of the belt-feds gave that secret away.

I had a neighbor ask me if I was in a band because of all the "long suitcases" I put in my car on weekends.
Seriously.

Does hanging AR mags from coathangers from my back porch count as letting my neighbors know I shoot guns? (just got painted with Krylon and were drying)
Does wearing my "Vote from the Rooftops" shirt with the Serbu 50 cal. count as well?
How about all the black rifle cases and the human figured targets that go back and forth between my car and the house when I go shooting?

Link Posted: 10/19/2004 9:52:56 AM EST
The ones that found out...are now dead....so take it either way. Yes and no
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 9:53:30 AM EST
No. A couple know I shoot, hell, half of them hunt, but they don't know about my black beauties. Which is how I want it.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 9:53:45 AM EST
No I'm usually too busy talking to Irene (my rifle) to hear what they say.

I have to comfort her sometimes.

They just don't understand.

I think all the shooting gives me away.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 9:55:50 AM EST
What neighbors?
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 9:56:37 AM EST
I think the frequent sound of gun fire and dead woodchucks give it away.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 9:58:34 AM EST
Most know I hunt and shoot.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:07:23 AM EST
too many snitches, feds, doj, batf, mjtf and agent provecateurs sniffing around to be letting strangers know anything.

all mine fell into the pool anyways...
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:07:27 AM EST
My buddy's parents live next door...they know...they're cool....but no one else around me has any idea. I'm is such soccer mom country where I live, the people would SHIT if they knew.

Only problem is, if they ever get my mail by mistake, I think the cat will be out of the bag...a day doesn't go by that I dont' get something from Centerfire, AIM, SOG, the ATF, or someone else who'd be a dead giveaway.

The poor UPS man knows hehehe...he's carried anough ammo up the driveway.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:10:06 AM EST
if you openly carry gun cases to your vehicle, they will eventually all know your into guns.

I am very careful about covering mine up or disguising my gun cases when I put them in the car, the best way is to load or unload them inside the garage so they cant see what your doing.

you cant trust the people in my area, there is no way I would openly let them know I was a gun enthusiast.

it's better to not flaunt your guns for security reasons
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:12:15 AM EST
I suspect mine know, even though I live pretty much in the middle of 500 acres.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:13:31 AM EST
I think that since I run through a half dozen mags here once a month they know I'm a shooter. Of course, most of my neighbors are too, and those that aren't asked me to shoot any coyotes I see on their land cause they can't.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:19:03 AM EST
I live in an apartment, and have several foreign (read: Indian) families that live there... gosh, probably half of my building is Indian... I'm sure some of them have seen me carrying long cases to an from my car. The other day, unloading my stuff from Gunstock, I had my M44 out of the case in my trunk. I put the case on the ground, opened it up and put my M44 in it.... while an older Indian couple from another building were walking by.

Fuck there are a lot of Indian people in my damn apartment complex!!

They didn't really react. They saw it and kept walking and I just went about my business.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:19:38 AM EST

yes and they don't like it
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:21:48 AM EST
My neighbors think I'm a serious gardener. I keep getting packages delivered from Bushmaster and Cheaper Than Dirt.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:22:36 AM EST
my postal worker droid knows. every month she delivers the American Rifleman, a Dillon, and a Tapco catalogue. Sometimes junk mail from AIM Surplus. She never messes with me
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:23:23 AM EST
No because the JBT's will go to the neighbors for intel when you don't turn them in.

Hell no !! I'm just waitng for the day the do find out !!!!
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:30:16 AM EST
Yes - the 100-yard range & permanent shooting house were a pretty good tip-off...

But I live WAYYYY out in the sticks, my closest neighbors certainly aren't close by "urban standards," and everyone within the sound of our range is related by blood or marriage except for the fella across the road... and he's a co-worker and my very best shootin'/huntin' buddy, who has almost as many firearms as I do.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:32:37 AM EST
They now I'm a nut and they may know I have guns, But I don't think they think of me as a gunnut.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:34:00 AM EST

Here in WV just about everybody is a gun nut so I don't bother to try to hide the fact that I own and shoot guns.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:38:29 AM EST
Many people in my neighborhood know that my roomate and i have guns but, none would be stupid enough to take my guns
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:38:35 AM EST
Yeah, they know. I've told them if my house catches fire.....RUN. My place will leave a smoking crater.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:46:19 AM EST
Guy up the street was walking by when a friend was carrying his newly barreled FAL to his car. You should have seen his eyes bug out. You'da thought we were terrorists or something. Some people just don't understand I guess.
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 10:49:09 AM EST
My neighbors are the leaders of the neighborhood watch program. They know I've got guns, but they don't know anything specific.

Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas...
Link Posted: 10/19/2004 11:00:10 AM EST
Lived in mostly apartments so far, never saw a need to bother telling them. I do wonder if anyone is curious about the rifle bags, though.

Sure, a few of my neighbors know. Of course, they're gun nuts too and they're my shooting buddies.
