Are you still active or reserve duty? Do you plan on insulting him? If both are "yes", then yes, could bring charges against you.

Otherwise, what's to worry about?

Yes, and No.  I dont plan on insulting him, but i would guess they probably dont want to get emails from every joe who went through basic. Plus i think they might still hate us

I ran into one of my old drill sergeants from 1988 at AT the summer of 2002.  That was freaky.  He did remember me, though.

Most DS are happy to help you and are proud to hear how their "students" are doing. Be respectful of thier position and thank them for starting you off right if it applies

He remembered me because he won $100 from another senior drill on a bet that I would outshoot the other drill sgt's platoon hot shot on BRM qual day.  I got 40/40 and a day off for winning him the hundred bucks.

Your Drill instructor won't remember you unless you take a pic of your face with mud and tears on it and send it with your e-mail...

So go ahead, waste his time... I dare ya...

I ran into one of my TI's (Air Force) at Eglin AFB in '84 or '85. He had our brother flight in basic, but the TI's would cover for each other on certain things so there were 3 or 4 that worked with every flight.

Anyway, he of course didn't remember me. And away from the basic training environment he was just a regular NCO (SSgt) who worked in one of the avionics shops. He had gotten tagged to be TI and said it was the most miserable 2 years of his career <G>.

Don't E-mail your drill sergeant, it's the gayest thing I've seen posted today.

If you do, make sure to mention that you're still single, and that you like salsa dancing and long walks on the beach....

+1  Tell him at the time you thought he was an asshole, he made it hard as hell on you, and you hated him.  Then thank him for teaching you the things that saved your life in combat and made you a better soldier.
