I have been keeping mine locked up with a magazine style OBI, hence the bolt is open. Does this cause excessive strain on the spring over time?
Link Posted: 5/3/2004 4:30:02 PM EST
I store it mil style.. Bolt closed, hammer down, dust cover shut.

Storing it open shouldn't hurt in a clean environment. Just be aware that a minor jolt will slam it closed.
Link Posted: 5/3/2004 4:30:57 PM EST
I store it closed. Doesn't take much to slam in a mag and pull back the charging handle.

Mag in, unchambered, bolt closed.
Link Posted: 5/3/2004 4:32:47 PM EST
Bolt removed... only because the charging handle has a tac latch on it which tears up my case foam... and it seems weird putting the bolt back in. I store the whole thing broken down...

I assume OBI, means open bolt indicator, if so as long as it is in a clean area it shouldn't matter. Springs wear due to cycling, not being left compressed or in one position.

Open, so I can always visually inspect the chamber.
Link Posted: 5/3/2004 5:08:21 PM EST
I pull the bolt out before I store it.

I also store my M1A's w/o trigger assemblies.

That's the way I've always heard it, as well.
There was a message along these lines about a 1911 mag from Vietnam that was found in an attic loaded. It still functioned fine today and is now used regularly.

Bolt closed, empty chamber, hammer back. Why drop the hammer? I can see no good reason. And also holes in the floor/wall from "But it wasn't loaded!!" never happened to somebody who didn't drop the hammer.

They never happen to people that never picked a gun up either.
