I had a similar experience in Sicily while I was stationed there.  I was at a resteraunt and had consumed a considerable amount of beer.  I asked the waiter where the "toiletta" was and he just looked at me funny.  I tried everything I could think of including pantomiming needing to pee really bad.  He just kept shrugging his shoulders and acting like he didn't understand me.  I finally looked him in the eye and told him that I was going to go over and piss in his cash register if he didn't tell me where the bathroom was.  He started laughing and told me in perfect english where it was.  When I came back, I asked him why he messed with me, and he said it was a running joke there and I had done well.

That was also the night that I found out that if you put your cigarettes on the table, it meant that they were free to anyone that wanted them.  The locals would slide over, take a smoke and order you a beer.  I ended up having a really fun time, as much of it as I can remember anyway!

A couple of years ago, I was working a booth at a trade show in Essen, Germany. Whenever someone would approach me in the booth, I would say "I only speak English". The younger people would give their English a try, but the older ones I just directed to one of the German's working in the booth.
So, this British guy walks up and asks if anybody speaks English, I step up and say "Yes, I'm from California". The guy rolls his eyes and shoots back with "Oh, just barely". ()
I immediately went into "surfer mode" with "Duuude, that was tight, chill out." followed with "We'll hook you up with watcha need, just give it a little hang time, it'll all be cool". I continued with that until he left, and my German friends, who speak English and knew what I was doing, and I have laughed about that  ever since.
