Curious as to what the majority prefers and why.

Personally, I find it YMMV.

What say you?

ETA: Pic for reference, not mine.

Your mileage may very. IMHO, varies shooter to shooter. Curious as to what the majority prefers.

This, because it is how I was trained.

It's pulling ahead in the poll. Seems (so far) majority says lower 1/3.

Lower 1/3.

Less cluttered view, head up higher.

Absolute. The only reason I would be using the irons is if the optic failed. I see no reason to limit my field of view through the glass.

ETA: I'm using flip up irons, so if somebody is running fixed irons I could see the point in lower 1/3rd.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 12:39:47 PM EDT
Absolute.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 12:42:22 PM EDT
None. Iron sights only.

After I added the poll, I realized I had forgotten irons only. I was waiting for one of you guys to show up
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:13:37 PM EDT
Absolute, works best for me.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:13:49 PM EDT
Wow, absolute has taken the lead.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:16:29 PM EDT
Absolute, its how I trained, BUT the rear BUIS needs to be folded down.

If its a rear BUIS that doesn't fold I would prefer lower 1/3.

Honestly though it doesn't really matter.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:25:48 PM EDT
lower 1/3rd if it's a fixed tower, absolute with flip-ups.

IMO, the whole point of a dot is to declutter the sight picture and provide for better visibility.  why would i want to occlude a big portion of the most important part of the sight pic if i don't have to?

Absolute
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:30:40 PM EDT
Lower 1/3
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:32:55 PM EDT
Absolute, but with a folding rear sight so I don't have to look at it all the time.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:34:05 PM EDT
Absolute  on my aimpoints
Lower 1/3 on my eotech

As to why LaRue only makes lower 1/3 on there eotech risers
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:36:20 PM EDT
Absolute with KAC folding
Lower 1/3 with fixed DD or LMT
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:38:50 PM EDT
I voted absolute, mainly because it isn't 1850 anymore and I have aimpoints.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:40:10 PM EDT
Lower 1/3.  The irons are out of the way (mostly) until I need them.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:45:47 PM EDT
Lower 1/3 with ML2. Way I was trained. I don't see the FSP until my rear BUIS is flipped up.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:50:26 PM EDT
Both.
I use lower 1/3 with my fixed front sight and absolute with my fold down sighs.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 1:52:50 PM EDT
Lower 1/3 if it's a telescopic stock.  Absolute, with irons down if it's a fixed stock.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 2:23:21 PM EDT
Lower 1/3
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 2:27:29 PM EDT
Absolute.

Magnets.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 2:35:17 PM EDT
Fixed front site, so lower 1/3rd for me.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 4:43:51 PM EDT
I really need a red dot.  The pics in the first post got my brain going.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 4:45:37 PM EDT
I don't like anything obstructing my view in my optic. If optic fails I remove and use BUIS.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 4:49:27 PM EDT
using irons is overrated, hip shooting is where its at.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 4:51:29 PM EDT
1/3

No question
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 4:52:02 PM EDT
Lower 1/3.
When using the RD, my rear BUIS folds down, but I don't want my FSB in my dot.
When using the BUIS, I feel that the lower 1/3 gives me a better view and presentation of my target.

Poll should specify what kind of irons the user is using. Folding front BUIS or FSB.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 4:54:28 PM EDT
With flip-up BUIS, absolute.

With a fixed FSB or fixed front/rear, then lower 1/3 is the answer.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 4:56:15 PM EDT
Pie.  I dont use irons
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 4:56:31 PM EDT
Absolute
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 5:14:41 PM EDT
I have to admit that I voted absolute.  Then I was curious, so I grabbed my blaster.  It turns out I actually have the lower 1/3rd co-witness when looking through the sights flipped up.  I am running an EOTech 517, and Troy flips if that makes a difference.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 5:16:34 PM EDT
Lower 1/3 for me.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 8:42:01 PM EDT
absolute is what feels right for me
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 8:45:55 PM EDT
[Last Edit: 1/25/2014 11:01:10 PM EDT by Greggo556]
My preference:

Absolute co-witness works best with an EOtech reticle

1/3 co-witness works best on an Aimpoint.

Link Posted: 1/25/2014 8:46:54 PM EDT
No cowitness.  I use flip-ups for that reason.

Same, with a folding front as well.

Absolute works for me. Speaking of, I need a new mount for my Aimpoint Pro. Are there any mounts for it that let me keep absolute cowitness?
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 8:50:31 PM EDT
Lower 1/3 due to fix  FSP
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 8:51:05 PM EDT
Absolute with flip up sights.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 8:52:39 PM EDT
There seems to be some confusion to how this was worded and I think that a lot of people who keep their backups folded down are saying that they are using one or the other co-witness when that would actually be no co-witness as this is worded I do believe.
Link Posted: 1/25/2014 8:53:27 PM EDT
Absolute certainly sounds more accurate
