We’ve had several threads today about controversial topics (drug law, DUI law, abortion) that crop up from time to time here. Some folks are quick to jump in with the “Not this shit again” pic or something about a shitstorm but do not actually add anything to the discussion. Funny how folks take topics they hate and bump them back to the top by posting retarded shit in the thread. Personally, I like reading threads that cover controversial topics because I can better understand the views of people who disagree with me and these threads help me develop better arguments to support my own views. As much shit as we talk about GD, most folks make pretty well reasoned arguments (by the way, if you’re nodding your head thinking you made a good point, then I’m probably not talking about you  )

So the question is: Do you like reading threads about controversial topics?

Controversial threads keep GD interesting and the Mods busy.

I don't have a problem with controversy; it'll either interest me, or not.  ((shrugs))

I'm not a huge fan of it as it usually tempts me to say things better left unsaid.

Sure. I just hate the ones that end up 6 pages long and full of nothing more than giant walls of quotes from people going back and forth. When I hit that part I usually click the back button.

I like them because it lets me know who claims to be pro freedom/conservative/libertarian but really they are just a pro union/fudd/PETA/pro abortion/big government/democrat, I have to avoid those types.

I like being able to discuss opinions, but some people get very angry because someone disagrees with them.

There is any number of reasons for thinking something, and learning other peoples thoughts is a benifit in the long run.  Don't know why people have to beat each other down to prove something.

I like them but I'm always careful when the mods participate or things get nasty.

I like to think I know when to fold 'em...

I'm here for fun, info and be with like minds. Not to make enemies.

Can't be anymore concise or accurate than that.  Well put, me too.

drama is good.
Carefully thought out posts that give readers something to think about are good.
Differing points of view are good.

Dickheads that debase intelligent conversation down to the point of personal attacks are bad

ps... if its a dupe, I will pass over it. I wont rag on the OP by calling him/her a troll or posting that retarded 'cool story bro' cartoon..........

It depends.
Most of the threads with controversial topics usually turn into patented ARFCOM pissing contests.

The usual suspects show up, beat their chests and fling internet feces at each other.  Those threads have no value for me.
If people with most of their brain cells functioning show up and present rational, logical points of view, then it's worth watching or even participating in such a thread.
Those threads are few and far between.

It is funny when you wake up the next morning and the thread has vanished from your 'Subscribed Topics'.

Martin Luther King threads are a good example.  They all end up hitting the memory hole, usually sooner rather than later.
