Suicide is Painless
(Theme from M*A*S*H*) Through early morning fog I see, Visions of the things to be, The pains that are withheld for me, I realize and I can see... [REFRAIN]: That suicide is painless. It brings on many changes. And I can take or leave it if I please. I try to find a way to make, All our little joys relate, Without that ever-present hate, But now I know that it's too late, and... [REFRAIN] The game of life is hard to play, I'm gonna lose it anyway. The losing card I'll someday lay, So this is all I have to say. [REFRAIN] The only way to win is cheat, And lay it down before I'm beat, And to another give my seat, For that's the only painless feat. [REFRAIN] The sword of time will pierce our skins. It doesn't hurt when it begins. But as it works its way on in, The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but... [REFRAIN] A brave man once requested me, to answer questions that are key. Is it to be or not to be? And I replied 'Oh why ask me?' [REFRAIN] 'Cause suicide is painless. It brings on many changes. And I can take or leave it if I please. ...And you can do the same thing if you choose. |

I always wondered what kind of sick fuck wrote that morbid fucking song.
Have you ever read the words to "The End" by the Doors?? SGatr15 |
I like "The End" by the Beatles better.
"And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make." |
SO how about singing
"Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult? |
And be heavy with the cowbell! |
His name would be Johnny Mandel, a big-band jazz/swing trombonist from the 40s and 50s. -Troy |
Man tha's another one. But I do like that one alot. And more cowbell. |
Great, now I have the urge to bust out my M.A.S.H. DVDs and stay up all night watching them!
I hate to tell you this but there is a version of Don't Fear the Reaper out there by a band called Theatre of Tragedy that sounds better than B.O.C. |
It came from the movie. When the dentist wants to kill himself because he can't get it up and they give him the pill that knocks him out.
Yeah, I thought the song was great in the context they played it in... They were rockin at the end of it. |
I am Painless. I ain't got anything to do with suicide. |
Why in the world would anyone WANT to know the words to that jackassed song?
The whole show was jackass from beginning to end! Unless Alan Alda is your idea of a great entertainer! Eric The(Sheesh!)Hun |
Heresy! Sacrilege! |

It wasn't that bad. I grew up on it and turned out ok. Things I got from M.A.S.H. 1. There are placed like Korea that really suck. Glad I don't live there. 2. War isn't all fun and games. War is a godawful, terrrible thing and should only be done when no other options are available. 3. Thank God for the doctors who put our guys back together. 4. Even in the midst of hell and war, noble men will strive to live a dignified existence. Simply put, who you are dicatates what you take from a show. Mickey Moore would have an entirely different perspective I'm sure. I also managed to watch Hogans Hero's without hating myself for being of German decent or thinking all Germans were morons like Klink or loveable baffoons like Schultz. |
Sorry, AUGGIE, but that show reeked of Alan Aldaism from beginning to miserable end!
I learned nothing other than that most movies don't transfer well to the small screen! Pure anti-war, liberal hype! I guess that I was older than you when it was running prime time. Eric The(Geezer-like)Hun |

My dad was a medic (non-commisioned officer) during Vietnam. He commented on how doctors would sometimes actually pull stunts like they did on the show in order to relieve the stress.
What kind of stress? I don't know personally. I just know he spent a lot of time at Ft. Sam Houston treating burn victims. Every once in a while he still gets nightmares from what he saw. I've heard a verse of that song before, but never the whole thing. That's a horrible song, yet it does fit the show. |

The first couple of years of MASH the tv show were funny. Once Trapper and Henry Blake left, the show sucked.
M*A*S*H the film is fucking hilarious. I had never seen all of it until about a year ago when it was on PBS one night. Much drier than the slapstick on the tv show, and downright funny. More satirical and pointed. |
Like I said, I enjoyed it and turned out ok. |
I had an uncle that served in Korea, he hated that show with a passion.
Mike |
The show was set in Korea, but it was really about Vietnam. Or at least that's what I read in TV Guide.
It's depressing. |
Hmm, I refuse to post my typically snotty comment at this point in the evening. And that is so unlike me. Eric The(LaidBack)Hun |

I knew the lyrics, and would sing it now and then (usually with no one around). I spent two weeks hiking on the Appalachian Trail and for some reason I couldn't get the song out of my head, so i sang it while hiking.
As for Blue Oyster Cult, I like Don't Fear the Reaper, but another strange song they have is Nosferatu. And don't forget Turning Japanese by The Vapors. |
Godzilla and Burning For You. |

nahh, here's my favorite version: home.wi.rr.com/davef/Bill Evans - Suicide is Painless.wma |

Wow, how on earth could that be? You mean you watched some show with a possibly liberal slant and you still vote republican and own firearms? gasp! You should be frozen in ice like piltdown man. You are an oddity that should be preserved for all time for everyone to stare and point at. People really need to lighten the fuck up. It was a funny TV show, not some piece of propaganda from the manson family aimed at starting Helter Skelter. |

Hey I know a lesbian former army nurse that is a liberal but she also owns an AR15. Go figure that one out.
MASH sucked.
OTOH, I did enjoy Tour of Duty and China Beach. The content was better. The theme music was much, much better. And my goodness, nobody looked better than Dana Delaney in a red bathing suit lying on the beach! (at least she did in the late 80's anyway) |

This is the first thread I remember ever being hijacked in the name of Blue Oyster Cult.
I am elated. |
