Not only no, but FUCK no.

I have a problem with politicians period.

I'm an atheist. Doesn't bother me. To a point. If everything they did was because "God told me to" then I might question it. But I have no problem with my leaders having faith in their religion, or expressing that faith.

Meh. Depends on the context for me. I don't mind a politician referencing their own belief, and as long as its just that, I don't care.
Link Posted: 8/13/2012 5:11:29 PM EDT
I'd rather they didn't. But I don't get butthurt when they do.
Link Posted: 8/13/2012 5:11:37 PM EDT
In God we trust. It must be true because I hear it all the time.

Nope.

Well, in your neck of the woods (region), it's usually about God telling people to murder folks.
Link Posted: 8/13/2012 5:13:35 PM EDT
The "God Army" and "Free Shit Army" are both based on things that aren't there.

I would much rather have a polytheist for President. That way he can invoke the appropriate deity for any given occasion.

I don't know how leftists would react to a polytheistic President. He wouldn't be a Christian, so they'd love that. But he'd believe in God(s), and they'd hate that.

I don't know. I just think it would be cool if the President was a really conservative Druid or something.
Link Posted: 8/13/2012 5:15:43 PM EDT

If they are sincere I have no problem with it. I don't like it when they are just saying it to pander for votes though.

The voters will not elect a president that does not believe in God.
See how well that's worked out so far?

I have no problem with them doing it as long as they ACT consistently with what they say.

If they are doing it to pander to Christians and don't really mean it... well that's between them and God.

As an Agnostic I have no problem what so ever with it...

And I vote the Republican ticket 99% of the time.

I have a problem with it, to the extent that I have a problem with politicians saying anything they are not sincere about just for the sake of securing votes. It feels fake and forced, rather than an expression of genuine belief in the Divine. It comes across as an approbation of the mob, not much different than the bread-circus-god axis of thought.

Strictly speaking, a politician's worth should be derived only from their leadership ability, from a concrete economical plan and policy issues, their vision of what's best for the country as a whole and their voting record. Anything else is meretricious fluff that at best only distorts the real issues or is an attempt at getting your vote through irrelevant small personal connections or pre-packaged sociopolitical soundbites, shaping voting blocks merely through reiteration of commonly held beliefs or personal likes and dislikes.
Link Posted: 8/13/2012 5:36:24 PM EDT
Obama? Pelosi? You betcha.

Bush the Younger? Not so much.

If you're going to invoke God in the public arena, you'd better be beyond certain that your ducks are in a row. Anyone who doesn't understand the Bible shouldn't quote from it.

That was a jab at the pro-Israel even more than the jews themselves crowd but, there's more AQ in Britain than the whole Arabian peninsula I'm sure.

Only when it's done insincerely to gain political points, which is about 87% of the time.

So we are all agreed that the Christian God is "the Almighty"?

Seems so based on this thread.

Are the politicians naming a different one?

This thread sucks. I now have Istanbul (Not Constantinople) by They Might Be Giants stuck in my head.
Link Posted: 8/13/2012 6:04:28 PM EDT
It doesn't improve my opinion of them.

Just want to make sure we have identified the correct Almighty.

Only one person mentioned any other religion in this thread. I just found it interesting.

Link Posted: 8/13/2012 6:07:37 PM EDT
Yes, especially when they do it in a country's founding documents.

Stupid old white guys.

Depends who it is.

If the reference is respectful, then no, even if I don't happen to share their faith.

When someone like Nancy Pelosi calls herself a Catholic but pushes what she pushes, it makes me wish for the return of the Inquisition...
Link Posted: 8/13/2012 6:11:44 PM EDT
Depends on the context. Someone sincerely and intelligently invoking God is a good thing; someone using God in their speech as an element of pure demogoguery bothers me quite a bit.
Link Posted: 8/13/2012 6:34:36 PM EDT
This is a Christian nation. Every politician should be invoking the Lord Almighty.

Does that mean I have to convert?

Link Posted: 8/13/2012 7:06:51 PM EDT
As long as whatever they believe in tells them to leave me alone, fine.

I'm talking about the region, not Turkey.

The first thing to happen in the first congress of the United States was for a minister to lead the congress in prayer and read four chapters from the Bible.
Today, 76% of our population claim to be Christians.
It's nothing to worry about, just a fact.
