I certainly have more money in movies than I do in my TV and surround sound.

Mostly big box store stuff.  I would hasten to add that I audition everything prior to purchase.   Dunno if you would call it cheapie but certainly not a $10k super system.  Yamaha receiver, Athena speakers, Velodyne subwoofer, JVC VCR, Sony DVD player.

I'm pretty much the same. I bought a mid range system about 3 or 4 years ago for about Aus$2.5k but no big TV. My DVD collection is over 300 disks at the moment. Assume an average of Aus$20 per disk, that's over Aus$6k just on DVD's.

I consider it a cheapie system.  All in all it was about $8 - $10k but it's like 7 or 8 years old now so it's not worth anywhere near that now.

I have my computer with a Creative Audigy II with the matching Creative 5.1 surround speakers.  It works ok for a computer set up.

I did... then I got rid of a lot of it and I'm in the process of installing a badass SQ setup in my Cadillac.
I started off saying, "no more than $400"

Eclipse Head Unit $300
CDT Componets $250
CDT 10" Sub $125
Misc Hardware $200
Fiberglass/Resin for Box $100

$1000 later and I still need an amp for my components... anyone have a cheap 2-channel amp ~25-50 watt RMS they want to get rid of for cheap?
