As somebody who both tent camps and RVs, pulling into a "campground" with a 30A hookup, full sewer/water, lawn furniture, etc is not "camping".

No. It's fun, but not camping.

Camping requires a tent, and may not involve a microwave oven. If you have a working microwave oven available to you, you are not camping.

No.

Doesn't really count unless you can carry all your stuff in one trip... Therefore, "car camping" isn't really camping either..

RVs are for pro bowlers, golfers, race drivers, and people like that...

who spend much of their lives on the road going from event to event across the nation.

Or for people who want to go cross country in a "mobile" home.

They aren't "camping" by no means... in fact they are quite the opposite.

I dont think sitting a tent up on pad as "camping" with your car parked on asphalt 10 feet away . My wife thinks if your not at home and not sleeping in a motel your camping . But Im not going to look down on you or envy you for how you do it as long as you are have fun and dont dick up other peoples good time.
Hence WE have this .

and I have this

No, car camping IS camping.  What you're describing is backpacking, which is a different animal.

Depends on what you do with the RV.

I've seen 40 foot motor homes camping in the Arizona desert all winter - with no electrical hookups, no sewer hookups, and no fresh water for several dozen miles in any direction. Then you have the tent campers who come for the weekend, play with their toys, and are back home by Sunday evening.

Indeed.

I can see the sense in campers too, such as pop-up trailers... they're nice for good shelter.

But anything bigger than a mini-van and it's not camping. It's mobile-homing.

Why does it have to be so finely quantified?

If it doesn't bother anyone else, who cares.  It's personal, and highly subjective.  If it meets the definition of the person doing the activity, then it is camping.  I'd rather encourage someone to experience the great outdoors in whatever fashion they prefer as opposed to telling them to stay at home.

If you can't carry what you need to a remote location for an uncertain period of time, you're not camping.

I pack a sleeping bag with cinch cords. Tents are for people worried about bears.

Do they stay at mobile-home parks?

In this part of the country they stay at places called "camp grounds."  I have no idea why.

A camp ground IS a mobile home park, essentially.

The difference being, mobile homes rent space long term and camp grounds are weekly or such.

You've got the same hookups available usually.

Now, I say usually because some will have spots with hookups and spots without...

Some others will just be a big old field someone decided to call a campground.

Others still will be a full on resort type of place with a "lodge" and shower facility and so on.

I usually see RVs parked in reserved areas of venues.

Be it at a stadium, horse track, convention center, etc...

At Six Flags the RVs always go to the full accoutrement RV camp.

The people more into roughing it, go to off-site grounds with little more than some mud and grass.

Here we are "off the grid" in Rio Costilla, New Mexico.  Nothing but solitude, cattle, and great fly fishing.  With a 6-month old baby, the RV (on loan from my mother-in-law) was much appreciated.  We're enjoying the great outdoors, but not really "camping".

I don't care what people do, only that they are calling it something that it isn't, by definition.
When you pile all your shit into a $90,000.00 palace on wheels, you no longer qualify for:

Lodge temporarily, esp. in an inappropriate or uncomfortable place

  • - we camped out for the night in a mission schoolroom

Now you wanna call it mobile-homing, I've got no issues with that at all.
See also:

noun /kamp/

camps, plural

  1. A
place with temporary accommodations of huts, tents, or other
structures, typically used by soldiers, refugees, prisoners, or
    travelers

    • - the enemy camp

    • - a detention camp

  2. The people lodging in such a place

    • - the shot woke the whole camp

  3. A
recreational institution providing facilities for outdoor activities,
sports, crafts, and other special interests and typically featuring
    rustic overnight accommodations

    • - a summer camp for children

    • - drama camp

  4. Temporary overnight lodging out of doors, typically in tents

    • - we made camp at a bend in the creek

    • - we pitched camp at a fine spot

  5. A facility at which athletes train during the off-season

    • - football tryout camps

  6. The supporters of a particular party or doctrine regarded collectively

    • - his views were firmly rooted in the conservative camp

Nope, still not qualifying. Verb and noun, both strike-outs. You're mobile-homing, stfu.

As a matter of fact, camping to me typically involves a place remote enough where seeing other people is extremely unlikely.

Same old shit.

There's always some guys who claims using anything with wheels isn't camping.

Then there's the guy who shows up sometimes to the HTF campouts to remind us that we're not REALLY camping because we didn't hike.

Then there's "that guy" who insist bringing tents are for pussies.

It goes on and on and on.

I grew up tent camping. Now I have a fifth wheel and I love it. There is no way my wife is going tent camping so it all works out.

I have no idea why so many tent campers insist on telling me I am not camping in my fifth wheel. I get to get out with the family so I really don't care what someone elses opinion is of it.

I don't really care what anyone calls any of it. The RV thing isn't my cup of tea.... if I'm travelling, I'd rather stay at a hotel.
If I want to go into the woods, I'd rather be in my tent (if I have family with me) or in my jungle hammock if solo. If I'm in the
woods, I'm generally trying kill something, so the RV thing is kinda a joke... and the "camp ground" thing is also kind of a joke.

This is my "idea" of camping.... at 11,000 ft. in September!
