Just wondering what GD's thoughts on this are, after a range trip I will usually just wipe down the outside of my firearms and throw them in the safe and clean them every 4-5 range trips or go through the whole safe once every 3 months to keep rust off. I don't see the need to clean everytime I go put 100-200 rounds down range. However I DO clean and lube my EDC after every trip, even if I put 1-2 mags down range. What do you guys do?

I usually just wipe down. If I use lead bullets, I'll clean the bore.
Pretty much after every trip.
Not right when I get home, but sometime before I go shoot again. |

I keep everything in the safe clean, functioning, well lubed, and fed. I paid good money for most of my guns, inherited others, and take good care of them all.
Don't get me wrong, it annoys me to have to detail clean an AR after only shooting 100 rounds through it, but that's just how I was raised. I take care of my things. |

View Quote I wouldn't say I don't take care of my firearms, I definitely do. I just feel it is alittle bit of overkill to do a detailed cleaning after every single range trip, nevermind the cost of lubes, clp's, etc. I also shoot at least once a week, so for some that go only 2 or 3 times a month, or less, it may make more sense to clean after every range trip |

HD guns and high end Guns every time. Cheap beater guns like my SBR and a few others every 1000ish or when ever I feel like it. Speaking of ARs only here there one tuff SOB they can take a lot and be fine no need to clean them ever time. Also the little metal they do have is treated to prevent rust.
If the weapon is shot it gets cleaned. If it was taken and not shot it gets wiped down. If the optic caps were opened the lens gets cleaned. But I have a few beaters that rarely get any of that treatment. Most of the time they only get cleaned if I'm bored, build up is excessive, or it was an excessively wet/muddy day.

Pretty much after every trip. Not right when I get home, but sometime before I go shoot again. I try not to let the sunset on a dirty bore. It happens. That's not good enough for me. My father used to wipe down bores and the outsides of guns after he used them. When I ended up with them they were all crusty and nasty inside the receivers. I had to have scraped out a tablespoon of hardened grease and carbon and shit out of his 336. Same thing with his Ruger Mark II which he was scared to take apart. I won't let them get that dirty ever again. I want them to be in as good a condition as possible for when I hand them down. |
Using corrosive ammo, definitely yes. The AR or Beretta get the bores cleaned at a minimum. Complete cleaning when needed. |
Anal because not all corrosive ammo is labeled as corrosive.

The first and last time I put off cleaning a firearm, I let my beloved #1MKIII's bore rust into a sewer pipe, shooting WW1-surplus cordite-loaded .303. It was my first rifle and I was new to shooting, and didn't know a lot about corrosive ammo, either. The bore cleaned up but was pitted and frosty for the rest of the time I owned it.

Depends on how often I'm shooting. If I shoot on Wed, and plan to go again on Sat, then I don't clean them. Sometimes I'll clean the BCG, but the barrel is chrome so it doesn't really matter.

I haven't cleaned my AR in 5ish years, just drench it with CLP at the end of a range trip, let it sit for a few minutes, shoot a half dozen rounds to blow it out and call it good. My carry gun guts cleaned every 60 day or 6 range trips, whichever comes first.
I'm not really into cleaning guns, so I just do it when they get really dirty (and never white glove clean). It hasn't caused a problem so far. Of course, black powder and corrosive ammo is a different story.
Yes, but I haven't cleaned my carry gun in over a year. I cleared it in front of relatives and a cloud of dust came out when I racked the slide back. When I decocked it another cloud of dust rose from it. Yep, I cleaned it afterward.

I keep my guns maintained, but I am not anal about cleaning them

I keep them lubed up, but don't clean too often. I just took the BCG out of my AR last night, it's got probably 700 rounds through it since it was cleaned last, all of them suppressed. I wiped the crud off, oiled it, and put it back together. Didn't touch the trigger group, it looks like hell but it's still working just fine, Geisselle knows how to build a trigger. My bolt action rifles only get the bore cleaned when accuracy starts to go down or if I'm working with a new load. When I shot USPSA my 1911 only got lube for 8,000 rounds, it kept running fine so I didn't mess with it. I don't recommend this, as all the crud and oil was just a slurry that lapped the slide and receiver loose, but it's still accurate and works fine. That pistol has roughly 30,000 rounds through it and the barrel has never been cleaned.

AR's I clean after every range trip.
AK's, AUG's, and HK's get a bore snake with a maybe a quick wipe down of the BCG. |
No answer for "when it's needed." Different guns have different needs.
I certainly do not clean after every range trip. |
I use to clean mine religiously after every shooting session. Lately I have gotten extremely lazy and they sit in the safe for maybe a year before I pull them out for a cleaning.
Depends on the gun.
Carry gun, home defense carbine, and heirlooms stay immaculate. My other ARs get cleaned 1000 rounds or earlier. My Glock 34 only gets cleaned for major matches. It typically goes 2500~4000 rounds between cleanings. |
I clean and lubricate them fastidiously after every trip to the range.
I usually clean them after the range.
This last time I got lazy |

I don't use corrosive ammo, except black powder arms. Therefore, only those need cleaning after a range trip.
Sadly, this means I don't shoot them as much. |
It depends on the gun.
My Mosins? Every trip as soon as possible to prevent corrosion. My EDC? About 100 rounds before I give it a good cleaning. My 3 gun AR? Before a match unless it's not been shot between matches. My VersaMax? I don't remember, will probably clean it this coming week. |
not every trip, but roughly every 3rd or 4th trip (~500 rounds for me)
what i will do is just spary the entire firearm with lubricant, wipeout it down and also spray the BCG with lubricant. |
Nope. Nope Nope.
. . . . Do you change the oil and filter every time you drive your automobile ? |
I'm edgy. My carry piece gets cleaned every 500 or so rounds. Everything else gets cleaned when it starts malfunctioning.
If I shoot my wife's guns, she makes me clean them immediately. |

Every time be it one round or 500 they get detail cleaned and lubed within an hour of bringing them into the house,no exceptions
Yup, im anal about making sure they are clean and lubed before putting them away |
I shoot Glocks bro. Don't even know how to clean one because it's unnecessary

More firearms have been ruined by "cleaning" than have been shot out. Unless it's my carry gun, I clean it only when it's so filthy it offends me. This from a Marine armorer schooled in the art of the Q-tip inspection.......

I typically clean most of them once a year in the winter.
My ccw gets cleaned about every few hundred rounds. The others will have 1-2k rounds through them over the course of year. |
I don't clean by a round count, I don't even count rounds fired. I clean when I look at it and think, "damn this thing needs cleaning"
I usually wait till my guns quit working or break before I clean them.
