For a CCW weapon, do any of you carry a .44 mag or bigger? Any Dessert Eagle,Auto mag,Causul,or other really powerful pistol calibers? If so why? If not why?

I used to carry my RedHawk .44 mag, but now I have 3 .45 autos that I would carry if I had my CCL. I don't have a .44 mag anymore, but I probably wouldn't carry it if I did. Mostly because of the overall size/weight.

HOWEVER...My Dad (a BIG man)(6'5"/275)carries a S&W Mod 29 w/6 5/8" bbl.He doesn't complain at all.

The reason I asked is because everyone is always comparing the 9 to the .45, but no one hardly says anything about carrying the big mules.

unless you live in an area where large animals could be a problem (Alaska), I would say .44 Mag. would be major overkill.

I have heard reports of 44 mags entering and exiting without expanding because they are designed for use against animals that have thicker skins and wider cross sections than people.

Also idiots using FMJ's or JHP rounds against the thin human flesh. A hydrashok or open hollow point would be more than enough.

During the Dirty Harry craze I bought a new 6 1/2" bright blue S&W Mdl 29 which I lugged around in a really nice Alessi swivel shoulder rig for a few days until I realized what an ass I was, whereby I put said revolver back in its case and and returned to my bobbed hammer DAO Mdl 36 and Colt MkIV/'70 45.

Because even with my being 6'2" the Mdl 29 was too big and heavy to be a practical CCW and it was clear that it was just a novelty for me.

As far as the the side issue goes, there are no bigger asses than bible thumping sanctimonious phonies.

.45 Colt and .44 Mag S&W N-Frames were very popular at Detroit PD back in the day...

Personally, 9 shots of .45ACP is enough for me.

I carry an AMT Backup .380. Small enough that I'll have it with me when a lot of .45's are home on top of the dresser. Rule number 1, have a gun.

A buddy of mine carries a big dan wesson .44 in a shoulder rig... everyday.

I always give him shit for carrying it, I call him dirty harry and so on.

You could probably disable a vehicle with a couple shots to the engine compartment with the .44. I dont think carrying one is such a stupid idea.

For summer carry in the fanny pack when I'm cycling or simply can't dress to conceal my normal carry gun (a 1911 in 45 ACP) I carry the gun pictured below.

It's a 3" S&W Performance Center tuned 625, custom cylinder that handles 45 LC+P. 460 Rowland, 45 WinMag, or 45 ACP. It's DAO, 7# trigger, and incredibly slick.

I carry it loaded with 265gr SJHP +P 45 LC rounds (1350 fps from my 6" 625 LC). As a reload I carry a pair of full moon clips in the pack loaded with 230gr HydraShok's in 45 ACP (what I normally carry in my 1911).

I don't feel overgunned, and there's a comfort level to the revolver in the fanny pack that I can't get from a 1911. I tried a ParaOrd LDA, but couldn't get used to the trigger.

Devil Dog, I used to carry a Smith and Wesson Mountain gun, in .44 mag.

I love that firearm and would carry it if reloading was easier than carrying a speed loader, or two.

In my state it was illegal to carry a firearm when "hunting" unless you had an appropriate tag. "Hunting" included helping friends scout for game and bow hunting. So if you were helping a friend with a tag find elk or bow hunting yourself you could not carry a gun, and thereby be at the mercy of predatory bears, cougars and hippies. Unless of course you faked like you were hunting for wabbits at the same time, and then you were limited to a shotugn with #4 shot. This would probably be effective, but was cumbersome.

They have now modified the rules somewhat and let a CCW holder carry a concealed firearm, even if they are "hunting" and do not have a tag. So I have purchased a Redhawk for use in these circumstances. How I am going to conceal it, I have no idea.
