I was wondering if anybody has any experience with keeping firearms in these vapor corrosion inhibitor bags.  The ones I've used in the past are Bianchi Blue Bags which have an airtight ziploc end.  The one I purchased most recently is the Kleenbore "Inhibitor" bag which has an open end with no way to seal it up tight.

How are these bags supposed to be used; sealed tight or open?  Do I need to put in silica gel if I seal them?  Are there any VCI products (the brown paper, etc.) that work just as well?

If these work, who's product seems to work the best?

I haven't tried the Kleenbore "Inhibitor" rifle bags, but the handgun bags have a ziploc seal.

The bags are to be kept sealed and the rifle only lightly oiled. If you over oil the rifle, the oil seeps out into the bag and destroys the vapor producing lining. Some bag manufacturers suggest that the rifle be unoiled, but I just can't bring myself not to add a light coat of CLP to the innards.

I heard the brown paper bags are more powerful and can stain blueing. You need to apply a test patch to your rifle and let it sit for a couple of days before storing to see if the finish is affected.

The manufacturers state that the dry bags can be more affective than Cosmoline, and most advertise they will protect for 5 years. Cleaning a rifle with a light coat of CLP is  a hell of a lot easier than stripping 5 year-old Cosmoline. Just for that they have to be worth something.

Yeah the Kleenbore rifle bag I got recently didn't have a sealable end which suprised me so I just fold the end over.  No real instructions either.
