Was listening to Wilkow the other day on Sirius and he brought up a half hearted argument about the 2nd Amendment that was really interesting to me.

He was saying that in response to the left claiming that health care, housing, and jobs are a right (which they are not) Conservatives should encourage legislation that would make it mandatory that the Government should give each citizen a weapon or at least a tax write off of a certain number of guns because the 2nd Amendment explicitly states we have a right to keep arms.

I know as a Conservative I don't want the Govt to mandate anything but we have a better argument for this than he left does for health care. Would you support a piece of legislation like that? Your tax dollars going to fund gun purchases for those who cant afford one? Tax write offs for one long gun, pistol, and Shot gun?

My only beef is that it doesnt state we have the right to be given a gun, just the right to keep and bear them.

Discuss.

I'd be okay with the tax write offs.

In inflation-adjusted dollars, firearms have gotten dirt-cheap. Nowadays, anyone who can't afford to buy them on his/her own probably doesn't have any business owning them anyway.

There's a certain level of stupidity that typically accompanies extreme poverty. If you're incapable of rising above that threshold, what are your chances of owning and using a firearm responsibly?

So does the .gov also have to buy us a Bible, Koran, or Talmud?

Same logic.  And I think I will bring this point up the next time some hippy wants to argue 0bamacare with me.

Lol. Like I said, as Conservatives we don't want the govt doing things for us.

You are right though, it is a good argument to use against libs.

I would support the legislation, but only if it came with a lighter load of police responsibility, and an increase in domestic work by the military. If anyone hasn't noticed yet, there are a lot of law abiding citizens who can't or don't want to responsibly own or operate a firearm. It would probably result in civil war. I'd take a tax credit toward a 1911 though!

That's definitely an incorrect blanket statement. Some people are genuinely disabled and unable to work. Disability only pays so much...

A lot of people are poor due to issues they can't resolve.

Not that I don't see the problem with the left's view of a "right" but I just can't bring myself to support a tax break for firearms.  It's simply distasteful.

I guess the tax write-off would be ok.  But pay for a firearm for everyone?  No.  Welfare by another name.  We have the right to bear arms, it's our responsibility to finance that.

You already pay for the army's guns and all of the stuff in national guard armories. You do in fact pay for the 2nd amendment. You just don't get to use any of it because we have passed laws to continuously keep a large standing army and foreign bases. Or you can buy a gun from the cmp that taxpayers already bought once.

No tax write-offs.  We dont need the government meddling anymore than it is, and really need to have it quit its meddling alotogether.  They create more problems than they ever solve.

If someone needs a tax write off as encouragement to buy a gun, then they do not need a gun.

Good point.  Let's just make it so that shooting ranges are tax exempt just like a church is.

Saying something is a “Right” means that the Government can’t stop you from doing it. It never means that the Government must provide it for you.

Um last I looked in my 1902 sears roebuck catalog, they had a few 2$ 12g  double barrel (side by side) shotguns available, according to the inflation calculator, 2$ adjusted is 48.94$ in 2009.

And for every person who falls into this category, I'll show you hundreds of poor people who are simply too stupid to own firearms responsibly. "Typically" is the key word here.
