m4 was semi/burst m4a1 was semi/fa m4a3 is flattop version of m4a1 |

I don't believe there was an M4 version of the M16A1... they didn't start the M4 model till the M16A2 was out... the A3 is a flatop with no carry handle as previously pointed out.

M4A1 is flattop with Auto. there is no M4A3 designation in the USmil. A3 is a faux-military designator used by *some* commercial vendors to refer to a flattop upper receiver. notably, ArmaLite bucks the trend and designates its flattops as A4 (in line with the M16A4 20" flattop rifle.) also, M16A3 has a fixed carry handle and Auto. M16A4 is a flattop with Burst. |
