ok, this sounds like a pretty newbie question.

But me and some guy were having a long argument about the differences between the m4a1 and m4a3.

Someone want to lay it down straight for me?

I don't believe there was an M4 version of the M16A1... they didn't start the M4 model till the M16A2 was out... the A3 is a flatop with no carry handle as previously pointed out.

sorry, not correct.

early M4's (and the Abu Dhabi carbines they were originally designed to be) had fixed handles with Burst.

current M4 is flattop with Burst.

M4A1 is flattop with Auto.

there is no M4A3 designation in the USmil.

A3 is a faux-military designator used by *some* commercial vendors to refer to a flattop upper receiver.  notably, ArmaLite bucks the trend and designates its flattops as A4 (in line with the M16A4 20" flattop rifle.)

also, M16A3 has a fixed carry handle and Auto.

M16A4 is a flattop with Burst.

If you are talking about the M16A3, you are incorrect.  The M16A3 is an M16A2, carry handle and all, with full auto capability.  The flattop M16 is the A4.
