Is it safe to use diesel fuel to clean a motorcycle chain? I've used it on my bicycle chains and it works great just spray it on let it soak for a few, brush it down then hose it off,  finish up with chain lube.  Just want to make sure it's safe for the motorcycle too. Any issues with damage? Also how the heck do you get the engine clean on these things? I don't think the previous owner ever cleaned it, lots of oil residue and road grime. Anything you guys recommend to clean it off better?

Diesel, or any light oil will work fine. I have a huge bottle of paraffin that I use, because I had it already.

Simple Green, or any other automotive degreaser should do the trick.

wd40 ftw. Then after reapplying chain lube you can also use wd on a rag to clean the overspray off the wheel.

Works in a pinch, and it's a good cleaner, and it's portable.

Diesel is somewhat close to kerosene, which I use almost exclusively.  Kerosene won't degrade seals of any kind, it's cheaper than dirt, and is a good cleaning agent, too.

You can really use anything that doesn't kill the seals on an X/O-ring chain to clean it, so long as you lube it properly afterwards.

Yea I was worried about O ring damage, but I guess diesel runs though an engine just fine.

I use WD-40 to clean my chain, dry it off, then use a good quality chain oil to actually oil it with.

I use kerosene. It takes the old dirty chainwax / lube off the chain pretty well, and dries up fast enough where it won't effect the new clean lube. I have one of those grunge brush things they sell for dirt bikes and that does a decent job of scrubbing the tougher gunk out of the nooks and crannies too.

Some chain manufacturers say no to diesel, I say use whatever trips your trigger.

The o-rings are chemically resistant nitrile, almost anything that's not harsh chemicals will work.

I mix kerosene & ATF 50/50 for a chain cleaner. Works great, breaks up crud and dirt really well, then lubricate with Teflon dry-lube.

I use diesel fuel to clean the chain on my KLR650.  I use an old stiff bristle paint brush, then wipe it off with a rag before I apply a teflon chain lube.

50/50 Mineral spirits and Dextron will work very well for the chain.
