I spend 365 days and a wake up there back in 1991-1992.
First it sure sounds like you don't know anything about DG as the out lying areas (at least to 1000 miles) is the Indian Ocean [;)].
The island is only military and DoD contractors. There were like a dozen Brits there mainly to collect customs fees from us Yanks. There were about 800 Navy and 40 Air Force plus an equal number of DoD employeed civilians - mainly Philippinos and Marucians.
The island is the staging area for the B-52 and B-1/-2? bombers. Huge bomb farms. It's also a satellite survilance and communication relay point.
They now get live AFRTS television (my job is to pump it into the satellites now) - had one channel while I was there but could have as many as 6 now. They had an AM news channel, an FM stereo radio station, a swimming pool, gym, outdoor movie theater, Navy exchange, a pizza place, and three clubs with drinks and meals. (get to the ex-pat club if you're allowed)
The men out number the women by better than 10 to 1. You can get military flights to Singapore [:p] and I think it was Greece (could have been Italy as I went to Bangkok via Singapore everytime) on the once a week flights.
Lots of donkeys, cats, chickens, crabs and beautiful sandy beaches. I learned to swim there (no SWIM as in miles in a day), played lots of slow pitch softball, and did lots of biking around the island. Quit drinking too after a nasty night with a bottle of Jack and an earthquake.
