So today we were ripping down a shed and burning the junk wood. Well there was a 4 foot black snake in the wall coiled up. My friend says get the .22 and shoot it. So I go to his truck grab his .22 rifle and shoot the snake. Well he had 3 chunks missing from his body and while he was barely moving he was not dead. What's been your experience with them in this regard.

Gun had a scope and I couldn't get further away. Couldn't get to the head easily I just kinda shoved it up there and pulled the trigger.

You have to destroy the head or separate it from the body, preferably both. And even then you can't be sure.

But why kill a non-venomous snake?

I've seen stories here and there about escaped pet snakes in HI but IIRC the only thing you'll really ever see in HI are sea snakes (very rare) and small blind snakes about the size of earth worms.

Senseless killing of a good snake unless you have chickens. They kill the rats and mice and other venomous snakes.

Squirrel are good eating.
Groundhogs are destructive pests.
Non-venomous snakes are actually good to have around the property.

When I was younger I shot two water moccasins that were coiled up together making love.  3" magnum 00 buckshot from about 10 yards.  It blew both of them completely in half, throwing the pieces about 10 ft off the ground.   When they landed, the top halves took off slithering through the woods hissing.
