Just wondering. I was raised by Democrat parents and was raised to believe that Democrat = Good and Republican = Bad.

After I joined the military I was exposed to new ideas and it didn't take me long to change my beliefes and became conservative and even claim today to be Libertarian even though I mainly vote Republican.

So the question is, how many of you have changed their beliefs in their life time?

Hopefully poll coming.

Okay...no friggin clue how to add a poll under this new format.

Nope haven't changed.

my parents never pushed politics on me when I was growing up as a kid, they're republicans. They thought that I should decide my own beliefs for myself and not just eat up what they tell me. They're rather happy with the way I've turned out thus far, they see that I'm not another mindless twenty-something ready to follow along with the crowd.

Do I agree with everything about the Republican Party, HELL NO. But I agree with them a whole hell of a lot more then the Democrats. I don't know much about the Libertarian party but there's not much of an appeal to me since they've never really had a great chance at POTUS

I have.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:24:44 PM EDT
Some have changed, mostly those related to the religious aspect of my upbringing.

Somewhat.

Nope... raised conservative, constitution defender, shooting lots of guns... and i am still the same.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:27:31 PM EDT
When I was a kid I thought I was a liberal. Voted that way once and then came around to my mom and dad's way of thinking. I really didn't know what the hell I was doing when I was a young'un.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:28:22 PM EDT
No. My family voted for Lincoln and against Roosevelt.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:28:34 PM EDT
I used to side with democrat issues, but since 2004 have been a Republican...my sister registered Democrat this year, but I managed to convince her to vote Republican...
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:29:22 PM EDT
I was raised conservative.
I was actually a neocon up until a couple years ago. Then I realized that was a big mistake.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:30:58 PM EDT
Raised by a Republican family... becoming increasingly conservative over the years.

I don't agree with Libertarians protectionist/isolationist platform and am pro life...

other than that I'm libertarian I just don't vote for them because of the above and they have no chance at winning... at least in a Presidential race. Congress on the other hand I'll vote libertarian.

Registered Repub.

Before I knew any better as a young teen up until I was probably 17 I was a conservative hater, even though had you asked me the issues, I probably would have sided more towards libertarian than democrat. Now at nearly 27 I'm a Libertarian, voted for Mccain but stil a libertarian none the less.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:31:06 PM EDT
The response of Republicans to the plight of the American car companies has turned me into a Democrat. I haven't voted for a Democrat since McGovern in '72, but fuck them now.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:32:06 PM EDT
My political beliefs have changed quite a bit over the years, but mostly I've just become increasingly convinced everyone is completely full of shit.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:34:43 PM EDT
There was a very brief period when I was a teenager that I was a radical green...then I got to the end of the book I'd been reading, where the author stopped talking about the impending ecological collapse and started talking about solutions. And his "solution" was that people needed to think a lot more positive thoughts, because that would have some kind of mass psychic effect and make the world a better place.

And then I realized he was totally full of shit and had been from the beginning, and thus I became conservative

I'm actually more libertarian than conservative these days, as I support gay marriage and oppose the war on drugs. I am an absolute believer in the superiority of the free market over every other system. And the idea of man-made global warming is nothing but fear-mongering designed to frighten the public and allow its propagators to seize political power.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:35:32 PM EDT
I'm becoming more libertarian as I get older (I'm 31).
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:40:15 PM EDT
Learned to really "dislike G. W. Bush".

Never did like "Compassionate Conservatism" concept...

Feel like U.S. is headed for a fall.

I NEVER would go to the Left, though.

G. W. Bush TOTALLY RUINED the G.O.P. FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Socially I am more moderate/libertarian than I used to be. Fiscally about the same.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 4:49:58 PM EDT
My political views have shifted around a little over time, especially through college though I tried my damnedest (and succeeded I should say) to resist the vast majority of the feel-good lib indoctrination.

Mostly I've just refined my ability to think through and articulate my political beliefs, if anything any philosophical thought I've put into political issues over time has made me more of a small l libertarian/independent.

For the most part though grew up a fiscal conservative and remain one, things that change are mostly opinions on social issues, and usually that's just a shift towards not giving a shit about the issue anymore...

i've gone from conservative republican to libertarian to libertarian-leaning republican.

I'll admit to being a leftist/socialist in early middle school but that doesn't really count I was too young and uneducated at the time to really understand what i believed in.

I'm more fiscally conservative, and less socially conservative, then I was when I was younger.

I started out as a Republican, the first time I voted was for Reagan, now I don't consider myself closely aligned with any party.

I was a Democrat 'til I turned 15 and got my first real job... First time I looked at how much in tax they took out of my measly paycheck I became a Republican.

I used to think the rich should pay more to offset the poor, etc., though dad ensured I was a shooter when I was 5.

Again... My eyes were opened when I got the check and wondered where the hell my money went.

whats funny is I've used that example to argue against democrats to people who think socialism will be the downfall of this country....yet they somehow still think that their taxes won't go up

I WAS (keyword WAS) a Republican for over 20 years. Until Bush and the rest of the Party went soft on Illegal Immigration right after he was re-elected. And they just got worse the four years after that. FUCK 'EM.

I'm now a mix of Libertarian/Constitutionalist.

My beliefs have remained the same.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 6:07:31 PM EDT
My parents never voted and were apolitical. When I turned 20 or so I became a huge anti-democrat. I have no idea what spawned it... maybe I have more common sense than I give myself credit for.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 6:08:21 PM EDT
I've changed over the years. Everyone goes through phases of determining what their beliefs are when they are growing up and out on their own for the first time as young adults.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 6:13:34 PM EDT
I've done a complete 180-hence the 2theLeft..
My dad was conservative, my mother is a bleeding heart liberal.. I was apolitical until 6 years of college, which we all know is Lib training..
Then, when I started to think for myself, I came to the Dark side..
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 6:15:40 PM EDT
Many of my politics shifted to the right during my college years.

Link Posted: 11/21/2008 6:18:22 PM EDT
Both of my parents are Democrats. My father is flaming liberal. My mother is a Republican turned Democrat (because of my dad and the 1960s). I considered myself Democrat until I got my first paycheck that was over $1,000 gross. I looked at the net payment and had been listening to Neal Boortz back in Atlanta and became libertarian back in 1999.

My father is incapable of having a political conversation with me without losing his temper. My sister is Republican and so is my brother in law. BIL's family is all Republican. At least my sister married well!
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 6:20:32 PM EDT
I was force fed the message President Ronald Reagan started over 45 years ago, and still believe this is the right way and the only way to prosperity and greatness as a nation.

My parents were HUGE Democrats until they took part in voting in Jimmy Carter. The four years of shit that followed turned them into lifelong Republicans, starting with Reagan in 1980. They raised me as a Reagan Republican, and no hard data I've seen on any subject has led me to question that position. I drifted to the left at some points, but somewhere around 1999 or 2000 I experienced a little too much painful reality and I made a hard right and never went back.

No. I was raised a bitter, cynical, brutal old Texas conservative Democrat who thought that the Enlightenment was a bad, bad idea and that everyone was doomed to die alone, beyond the sight of God. I have found my worldview to have been absolutely correct to begin with.

Party affiliation? Who knows. Before George W. Bush. the Republican Party at least pretended to like people like me. Now they just want my money. To hell with them.

Lifelong Right-of-Center.

Dabbled in Neoconservatism for awhile (hey, I was in college, cut me some slack!)

Came back around to the truth not long after the '04 elections: Rightist Minarchism

GWB, all his apostate Neocon RINO supporters, all their heretical works and all their scummy duplicitous ways need to be purged from the Republican Party without delay if we ever wish to win again; Bush and friends should NOT be welcomed anymore and cast into the outer darkness where they might mercifully die obscure deaths with no fanfare.
Link Posted: 11/21/2008 6:31:20 PM EDT
No.

I don't see how difficult it is to know what it is you believe in.
