Thinking back to a retirement ceremony we did, I believe we retired the head of the Chaplain Corps. If I remember correctly, the guy had something like 47 years of service. It was one of those announcements that was followed by muffled 'WTF?" throughout the marching element.

If Rummy remains at OSD, expect changes regarding mandatory retirement ages in the near future.  His idea has its merits - if someone is truly qualified and wants to stay, why on earth would we force them to leave?  Too many uses for their knowledge and expertise.  For many DOD staff jobs inside the beltway, the continuity wouldn't hurt either...
