they just told me that i can't ship my firearm because i am not an FFL myself. I am fully aware of the law.

Where did you try and ship the firearm from, the actual UPS Customer Center or a UPS store/third party store?  I have had no problems shipping firearms through UPS, but you have to ship from the UPS Customer Center.  UPS Stores and third party shipping locations will not ship firearms.

Pay on line and print your own label prior to drop off.  No need to have any conversation with idiots at UPS or FEDEX.  Just drop it at the depot.-
