The more people do these DNA tests the more BS family stories will be squashed.

Unfortunately these tests do not tell the difference between "native American" as in Indians and "native american" as in Mexicans.

Did you research the different DNA services? I would like to do this. What made you choose ancestry.com?

ETA: although with family names of Hogan, Honaker, and McClure and my family always being in the Appalachias I don't think there is going to be any surprises.

I did it too.

Turned out I'm less than 1% Senegalese.
I'm packing up to go to Harvard University to demand a minority faculty position.

It has been in my experience that most family " Histories " are lies .  Or at least heavily slanted for one reason or another .  So you are not alone and don't take it to hard .

My family told so many tales that turned out to be false that Holmes could not ever figure it out .

I've heard the native American thing from a bunch of people, with nothing backing it up other than the stories. There has to be some underlying mxn or reason behind all the bullshitting about it.

Yep, but they are not all "native Americans."

if you think the "indians" in Illinois and the "indians" in southern California are the same you are blind.

I should do it, my father in law is big into ancestry and all that and was nice enough to look into my family lines. My Dad's side was really interesting. We were basically one of the very first people to inhabit America, we had a Col. in the Militia and further back in England there was a Duke also supposedly related to Robert E Lee but that gets messy because of the Yankee's burning records. He made it back to the 1500's apparently. Let's just say, my family has not lived up to our name since the 1960's

Tagged for Peace Pipe pics.

My grandfather was born in Oraibi, AZ on the Hopi reservation, but he was only an honorary Hopi.  Bear clan.

So you paid your own money voluntarily to have your DNA put in a data base that others can access, with out your knowledge.

Most people thought my Grandmother was 100% and Mom's was 50%, including a jacked up name which most people thought was native.

This is hilarious.

Same thing happened to me.  Both sides of my family claimed Native American heritage but I came back 0%.  Over the years I've done a bit of geneological research and could never find any evidence of Native ancestry and the DNA just confirms it.  I do think my mom's side has something else mixed in there because several people are pretty dark in complexion and I recently found a photo of the couple I had narrowed down as the likeliest source of Native ancestry.  She's as European as I am but he looks like he has Indian (India) ancestry, or at least Southern European.  My DNA has trace elements from Northern Africa, the Middle East, Greece/Italy, Spain and Polynesia

This is the couple.

George Washington is my great, great, great, etc. grampa. Abraham Lincoln was a great, great etc. uncle and there is a long list of other great men in my family chain.
Are you saying this could be incorrect?
Jesse James actually was my great, great, great grandfather according  to my grandfather. He had a huge collection of memorabilia so I believe he believed it to be true. Not sure if that is something to be proud of or not anyway.

Courthouses.
Lots of courthouses in the South mysteriously burned during the Civil War. Including the one that was located about 15 miles from me, burned to the ground during a one day occupation by Union cavalry.
Maybe it was aliens!

Would you please source your assertions?
When many of us were in the military there was no DNA test.

Regarding the VA, please provide verifiable evidence.

Regarding the VA, please provide verifiable evidence.
Military has been taking DNA since the early 90s, to go along with your panorex and fingerprints.
VA has been "voluntarily" collecting DNA samples, however there is some indication that other samples are obtained, along with drug testing and other goodies.
