I heard this last night at a pub and figured I would have heard it here first.

I looked in the Industry section, but couldn't find Savage. Either way, I have one and love it and if they did change the logo I'm glad I got one before the change.

We all know the old logo. According to the guy at the pub the "new" logo is apparently either an "S" or some overlay of the letter "S"

New and Old.

Personally, I don't give a fuck. I mean, they are calling a Native American a Savage, so I can see where the offense would come from. And if they did it without any outside pressure, I'm okay with a company rebranding itself.

I'm from the area(15 min way from them). Actually heard a conversation a few years back of two women talking about how "disgusting" the logo was. I bet they had no problems with Elizabeth Warren though, they had the same look as her.

Actually they are calling the founder of the company by his last name. Arthur William Savage

History of the indian head logo

Chief Lame Bear, a Cheyenne,  approached Arthur to purchase lever-action rifles for the Indian reservation and the two men struck a deal. The tribe would get discounted rifles and Savage would get their support and endorsement. It was at this time in the company's history, that Arthur Savage added the Indian head logo--a direct gift from the Chief--to the company name.

So, the name "Savage" doesn't denote the Native Americans, it was the founder's NAME. Second, the use of the Chief's head for the logo was in honor of, with respect for, and with the blessing of the Native Americans in question.

Where the butt hurt comes in is all these enlightened individuals eaten up with feelings is they can't grasp anything that happened before they were born.  Could you imagine coming here from Europe and not knowing what you would encounter and you find people of a color you've never seen, wearing animal skins and headdresses, speaking a language that sounds like nothing they've ever heard.  No written language, I'm not even sure they had invented the wheel.  I think savage is probably one of the nicer things said.

But why else would their logo be of a Native American with the name Savage? You can't overlook that their pairing would be awfully coincidental otherwise.

But like I said, I don't really give a fuck.

They are NOT calling a Native American a "savage".  Savage was the name of the guy that started the company (Arthur Savage), and the Indian head logo was used as an endorsement from Chief Lame Deer.

Edited my post with this

And sure, if you were born during or before the Regan Administration, that's what you see native symbols representing.

However, born in the 90's, all they can think of is smallpox blankets and casinos.

If you knew the history of the logo it might change your mind.

The logo was an actual person who gave permission for his likeness to be used for the purpose.

Apparently, Canadians are "Shocked" at the name

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/savage-arms-guns-at-canadian-tire-shocked-clayton-park-shoppers-1.3186654

Quote from the article:

"It's racist in the way that it puts the two together," she said. "I think they should discontinue selling those guns."

Rach-Sharp said the backstory doesn't make a difference.

When was Savage purchased by Vista Outdoors, or was Savage an ATK property beforehand?  I'm thinking it was recent, hence the logo change.  New management.

ETA:  Vista bought Savage in 2013. Damn, they also own CCI, Bushnell, Bolle, Camelback, Primos, Hoppes, Federal Premium, RCBS, Alliant Powder, Blackhawk . . .
