Just looked 'em up on Guitar Center and hardly any were below $2,000. Ebay was only slightly better, a few in the $1,800 range.

I seem to remember them not long ago going for like $1,200 pretty frequently. Did something change? Did I just go through a wormhole or something?

Have things become more valuable? Or is it that everything is more inflated?

Early 1900s, a really really nice suit would cost you a $20 gold piece.

Today, a really really nice suit would cost you about $1,200... About the same price as what the same amount of gold that's in a $20 gold piece goes for.

Everything is inflated due to our wonderful federal reserve, US treasury, and politicians.

So many variations. From less than $1000 Studios to "the sky's the limit" Customs.

Unless you're comparing exact models and features you'll never be sure.

I found this table while poking around:

Vintage Guitar Price Value For 2007 :

1958 - 1960 > $240 000 to $420 000 ( les paul standard flame top )

1961 - 1963 > Renamed : gibson sg les paul standard

1968 - 1969 > $7000 to $11000 ( first goldtop les paul standard reissue )

1971 - 1975 > $4200 to $5000 ( special orders sunburst or goldtop )

1976 - 1989 > $2200 to $3000 ( les paul standard various colors )

1990 - 1999 > $1700 to $2200

It's a snapshot from 2007 but you can get a feel for "current" pricing by looking at the 1990s as they would have been around 12-17 years old at the time..

IMHO there are simply too many variations of LP offered today.

New or used?

I know new ones are going for $2,000+ for traditionals and classics. Studios very greatly depending on finish and options.

Correct, the regular factory that made classics and traditionals. The Custom Shop is still making their models.

Gibson remained in limited production even as their factory was being refurbished. They're back in full production.

For a few weeks, there was a shortage. But only for a few weeks.

That's too bad. I'm barely an advanced beginner after all these years, but have always wanted a LP.

Wifey gave me one for our 10th anniversary this August.

Depends on what you want. Studios which aren't bad guitars and offer a great customization platform can be had from $700-$1500(look for a faded studio if you want quality playability and will sacrifice the beauty).

The special run studios like the Voodoo, limited colors, etc can usually be found with enough due diligence on the cheap if they have been discontinued for a while.

I'm about ready to replace my studio's 592rs with Slash signature Seymour Duncans.

Eta: I knew 6 months ago where you could get a LP robot guitar(self tuning) for $1700 cash.

I seemed to remember there were a number of lawsuits filed over price fixing at Gibson. Anyone know if anything came from this?
