Was out in the country this weekend to do some shooting and spent some time at the in laws.  I found this behind one of the out buildings that stores hay and stuff.  I have seen it before and didn't really pay attention as there are a lot of bricks, concrete, wood, and whatnot that was tossed behind the buildings over the years and it's usually pretty overgrown.  I was digging through the mess to find some weathered wood for a project and saw this.  In laws do not know where it is from.  Property was my wife's grandfather's and they have passed.  I can't quite tell what is says, but it looks like B Zarthman 1880.  It looks like there is something in the upper left too.  Any ideas?  How can I clean off the moss without damaging the stone?  It looks to be limestone that has been cut (there is a lot of it used around here).

Wet it with water and see if the letters contrast better.

Was that a thing?  It would make sense, but I haven't ever seen any others.

The farther east you go the stranger (but logical for the times) things get.

Out west here things are much more modern due to late arrival of populations. The east coast has some REAL strange oddities.

Kansas is kind of in the middle of all that.

Try a pencil rubbing.  Looks a lot like various old graves I've found in the woods before.  Look for a foot-stone?

Good first step.  It's been exposed to rain water for well over 100 years and a little more wont hurt.

Any online references to that last name and any nearby towns?

I'll try that.  It would be cool if it was a property marker, but I don't want to move a headstone.  Honestly, I doubt that is where it originally was.  I am sure her grandfather would have tossed it in the junk pile if he found it on his property.

Interesting.  I have seen modern markers, but none like those.  I am hoping to find references to the name, but none so far.

Could be a gravestone, text sounds like it,  but 1880 seems late for that sort of thing in Kansas to me.

Historical society or whatnot might give you an idea regarding the surname of Zarthman. Or a property records search at your county recorders office.

I searched, but haven't found anything.  All of the birth and death records seem to start a little later that and I can't find the family name listed anywhere in the county so far.

Thought about trying to get a bunch of hoses together and hauling the pressure washer out, but limestone is pretty soft and I am afraid I'll gouge the rock.  That and it's quite a few hoses away from water.

More likely a barn stone.

I got a pre civil war grave yard behind my house. A lot of the grave stones were broken by some assholes.

Bleach and water then scrub it with a rough cloth and you should be able to read it.

Curious how you found them, since they were unmarked.

Supposedly there are a few unmarked graves out here-mostly children that died at/soon after birth.None have any markers.A few of the old timers have talked about it.

Looks like an old grave marker to me too.May have been out somewhere, and someone finally just picked it up and threw it up by the barn and farmed over the area.

The pencil rubbing sounds like the easiest way.

Usually multiple sets of headstones & foot-stones close together (infant/child) unmarked and lined up.  Sometimes there is a marked grave in the same area.

It looks like an old grave marker, but it could also be from and old stone or brick building. I've seen similar stones still attached to older structures. Usually last name of owner and date of build.
