Dictionary.com says the klan was formed to fight REPUBLICANS over civil rights
www.answers.com/main/ntquery?method=4&dsid=2040&dekey=KuKluxKl&gwp=8&curtab=2040_1&linktext=Ku%20Klux%20Klan

The First Ku Klux Klan

The original Ku Klux Klan was organized by ex-Confederate elements to oppose the Reconstruction policies of the radical Republican Congress and to maintain “white supremacy.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the Klan emerged as a terrorist group dedicated to defeating the Republican party and keeping blacks in "their place" socially and economically.

I wonder how the democrats are able to fool the liberals(and blacks) into thinking
they were FOR civil rights, when they did everything they could to fight them
(could it be the leftist liberal media?)

dem george wallace who sent State Police to beat and gas protesters over school integration
dem senator byrd who was a member of the klan and opposed integration of the Military
dem mayor joe smitherman sent State Police to beat the voting rights Selma marchers
dem Georgia gov carter distributed pics of his opponent with black basketball players in campaign

AND the dems passed the jim crow laws I keep hearing the "black power" people complain about

Maybe I am just reading this wrong, but I think the dems are lying............

republican and democrat have not, until just recently, meant conservative and liberal respectively

The original Klansmen were former Confederate officers that started to resist the Union occupation forces. They were turned into something else years later.

Abraham Lincoln was the first president from the Republican Party. He is most famous for his role in ending slavery in the United States with the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation as a pragmatic war measure which would set the stage for the complete abolition of the institution.

The Republican Party was organized in Ripon, Wisconsin on February 28, 1854, as a party opposed to the expansion of slavery into new territories.

The KKK was involved in a wave of 1,300 lynchings of Republican voters in 1868.

The republican party wasn't a racist party.

Up until shortly before the Carter administration, Democrats were largely conservative, but Republiplcans leaning to the liberal.

Haven't you ever heard of the Dixiecrats? Mostly conservative southerners tended to vote strictly Democratic, and some of the older ones still do, not noticing the party shift.

It is amazing how hard it is to track some of this material down
joe smitherman is one of the most documented racists ever
none of the recent articles seem to want to call him a democrat
especially none of the media at the recent hillary "selma march"
event celebrating how much the dems have done for civil rights

Things have changed; the Dimocraps used welfare handouts to gain a new generation of voters.

free money, rent and medical care.......if you DON'T have the father in the house

The Republican Party was formed in the late 1850's specifically to fight slavery.
All the famous Northern anti-slavery people joined the party.

The "Radical Republicans" were the reason for the South starting the war when their standard bearer, Lincoln was elected President.

The KKK was first a men's secret fraternal organization of former Confederate officers.
Like most of these clubs of that time, it was really a social club.
Where it went bad was when they noticed the former slaves fear at seeing them riding around at night in the outlandish costumes.
It was a short step to terrorism to fight the Reconstruction and it's excesses.

The South lost the Civil War, but won the Reconstruction.
Due to the hatred of the North and the Republicans, the South was more or less 100% Democrat from the 1850's through the 1970's.
There are some Southern states in which not ONE Republican was elected to ANY post for over 100 years.

It was the Dixiecrats who both sustained segregation after the war, AND served as King-makers in the Democratic party.
The "brain" of the party was in the North-East liberal establishment, but the muscle, power, and votes to win elections were in the South.

So, the South pretty much got what it wanted, if Northern Democrats wanted to get elected.
Even power-house FDR had to toe the Southern line on matters of race.
One of the last "hurrahs" for this Southern hold on the party was JFK having to accept LBJ as a running mate.
Without LBJ, JFK was seen as too liberal for most Americans (Today he'd be WAY too Right-Wing for the Democratic party), plus LBJ could deliver the South, as always.

In the 1960's, it was the Republican Party that JFK and LBJ made deals with to insure the passage of the Civil Rights agenda.
The Southern Democrats fought it tooth and nail.
No less than currently famous, "Conscience of the Senate" and Democratic Hero, Robert Byrd, former Grand Kleagle of the Klan conducted his famous filibuster in the Senate.....against the Civil Rights bill.

The Great Sea Change came when Southern blacks began to vote and run for office.
The old racist Dixiecrats no longer had a place in the increasingly Left-Wing and minority party, so they left.
The big mistake the Republicans made was in allowing the old Dixiecrats into the Republican party.
Few of them ever got elected to any major post, but their presence tainted the Republicans.

Due to that mistake, the New Leftist Democrats were able to claim it was the Republicans who were the real racists.

So, the Democratic Party was the Party of slavery, the Party of the Civil War, the Party of segregation, and the Party of the Anti-civil rights Dixiecrats.

Contrary to popular Democratic belief, Bull Connors, and all the Southern Klansmen, politicians, and segregationist were NOT secret members of the Republican Party.
They were ALL valued and important members of the Democratic Party.

It was only in the 1960's with the Dixiecrats gone and Walter Mondale's opening up the party to the radical Socialist Left that the North-Eastern Democrats were able turn the party to minority pandering.

As Ann Coulter so eloquently put it, "The Democrats have ALWAYS discriminated. They just decided to change WHO they discriminated against from blacks to whites".
