I need to reinstall XP with a clean install - a lot of viruses and trojans. The laptop's internal DVD player/burner is broken.
I changed the BIOS to boot from the USB but the laptop tells me I can't boot from it when I restart the computer.
Dell wants $49 to tell me the secret. Can anyone offer some help? Thanks.

Any specific error message? Did you make the stick bootable?

Thumb drive booting is kinda new, and my mobo is about 3 years old and has an option to boot from a thumbdrive in the BIOS. However when I try to boot a thumb drive linux distro that works on other computers, it just doesn't work. It's a known problem by the manufacturer, and they've released BIOS updates, but for some reason those just don't work either.

It's not a stick, it's a USB DVD/CD RW.
I updated the BIOS but it still doesn't work.
When I change the BIOS to tell it to boot from just the USB I get a "no go" message with loud beeps.
This blows.

Maybe give the above a try. I have a USB XP Install drive that works quite well.
