The point man on an infantry patrol looks back at the guys in his squad and calls them REMFs.

The guys in the squad call the rest of the company REMFs.

and so on down the line.

I referred to the guy driving a new Mercedes as being a rich bastard when he cut me off.

a while back I heard some homeless guy refer to me as a 'Rich motherfu(ker, and i drive a 2000 stripped 4 cylinder Toyota pickup.

OK, let's put this to ARFCOM wisdom.

Define 'rich'.

Well some say I am, but I sure don't feel like it.

For me, rich would be being able to spend whatever you want on whatever you want. That would mean pretty much any house you like, or more than one, any car, rv, etc....

me

not

Living the lifestyle that you want and not having to work. My definition anyway.
Link Posted: 10/11/2004 5:29:18 PM EST
There are different levels of "rich." Just like there are different levels of beauty.

Let that stew for a second or two...

My definition of money rich is an annual household gross income of >$100,000

However money is not everything. Though my household does not bring in half that much, I consider myself rich. Rich in love, rich in having everything that I need. Rich in knowing God. Rich in having a wonderful family.

Although I sure would like a new Hummer.

$100,000 out here won't do dick for you.

You'd need 10x that if you want to live in one of the better neighborhoods, send the kids to private school, etc...

Your savings earns interests at a faster rate than you can spend it.

I once read about a Saudi prince who made $50,000.00 a day in interest income alone. That's rich.

There’s Bush rich (millionaire) and Kerry rich (Billionaire). But seriously Hillary said that there is no reason for anyone to make more than 35 thousand a year. Except of course for politicians. They rule over the stupid people and keep them from killing themselves so they are worth it.

In todays language, rich equals secure. This is why class warfare is so effective. It taps into the jealousy of the insecure.

Humans are basically spiteful. The minute the 1st one of your group of friends stared making money post education, he all of a sudden became a target for the rest of the group. Oddly, the group was never upset when everyone was driving crap, living off pizza, and living 10 to a house. People only get upset when someone does better... This is why the 'downtrodden' often like communisim. It makes everyone a serf.

I forget which Roman it was, but he felt that a man was not truly rich unless he could raise his own army. He did, and went to war against the Perisans I believe.

Immagine being able to afford the soldiers, tanks, aircraft carriers, and such it would take to do this.

Now that is rich.

lot to be said here.

BTW, whadda you got against pizza, anyway?

Rich.... having enough of what makes you happy, secure, and content, to make you happy, secure and content.

When you call someone else 'rich', it's usually because you believe they have enough to do it for you.

For most of us though.... there is no "enough".

To me rich means someone who does not have to work and can still maintain a lifestyle better than mine. I am not rich in any sense of the word with child support of 1200 a month and a 28% tax bracket I am pretty strapped.
Link Posted: 10/11/2004 5:46:33 PM EST
To me, if you're happy with what you have and have someone to love and love you in return, you are the richest person on earth.

Per year, then you're talking. But a million isn't that much money in todays world. It could wipe your debts away (specifically a mortgage), produce some temporary luxuries, and provide a good foundation for the growth of wealth. But the days of being able to retire and live well on a mil are long gone...

According to the people who work for me, I am.

5 years ago, if you had told me what I'd be making today, I'd have told you that would make me rich.

Funny thing is, even with what I make, I still can't afford to buy a house in South Florida.

My goal is 200k post taxes in Arkansas. That is about 4,000 a week. I think I can live quite nicely on that, and I don't think it is too far off. I decided on Neurology which makes significantly less that what I had chosed prior, OB-Gyn (or OG-BYN as Kerry likes to call it). All of the obgyn docs were offered 200k+ right out of residency this last year. Hopefull, I will be making 150+ in 4 years.

After I pay off my 125k in med school debt, I will be a happy camper. I think I deserve some class IIIs then.

depends on where you live: for example 100K in turkey would easily make you a millionare many many times over.

Kerry says I'm rich, and he pays less than 15% in taxes. Screw him.

Kerry and the d3mz define anybody that make $25,000 or more a year as rich.

Tax the rich!

Many poor people are happy. Many wealthy people are very unhappy.

Debt free and having enough cash to afford beer, along with not having to work too hard and having to do some planning=rich

You would be amazed at what $100,000 per year in N.E. Arkansas can buy you.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a dumbass making $100,000 per year that is in debt for $10,000,000 doesn't consider themselves rich.

That is why you will see people sell a house in California for a million $ and move here and buy a better house and some land for about $250,000.

Link Posted: 10/11/2004 6:08:17 PM EST
In terms of money-
Here in the PRK, you are no rich unless you are making a good $5 million a year. Yes, you read that right. Since houses here can hit near a million very easily, you get the idea.

Well off here is $500,000

In another state, $500,000 a year might be rich..it's all relative.

However, no matter how much money and toys you have, you can still be unhappy. Look how many rich people turn to drugs, drinking, etc...they are not happy despite having loads of cash.

My point exactly.

Link Posted: 10/11/2004 6:09:14 PM EST
MC Hammer went broke making $37 million a year.
Link Posted: 10/11/2004 6:09:54 PM EST
To make it on the Forbes richest list this year I believe you had to have at least $ 750,000,000 (yeah, seven hundred fifty million) in net worth. John Kerry's wife was at the bottom of the list and the only non-billionaire that made it.

I think that if you had at least $100,000,000 you would be set. Without that kind of money you could easily run out living the high life, buying jets, yachts, estates, etc.

Sure you can make do with less, but is that really what being rich is all about?

There can't be that many truly "rich" people in the world since they only make so many Rolls Royce and Bentley's every year.

Rich doesn't make you happy, or solve all of your problems. Everyone has their own set of adverse circumstances to deal with. Richness doesn't make you secure either as you cannot buy even 1 minute of time and you have so many more things that only complicate your existence.
