Damn deer got some revenge on me last night:

Fortunately, I took my wife's minivan instead of my brand new F-150.  Nothing like sending a car with T-tags on it to the body shop.

So what bumper/brushguard should I put on the truck to protect from future attacks?  I definitely do not want a cheap piece of low-grade steel that's going to crumple back into the truck upon impact.  I am aware of Road Armor stuff.  Anyone have any knowledge or experiences with other brands?

Tough Country isn't bad.

It might mitigate some damage, but if you hit them hard enough you are still looking at frame issues, or just sending the thing up and over the hood.

Pretty much anything aftermarket made of heavy stock and DOM tubing will probably be way better than nothing at all though.

If it's really about preventing deer attacks, mount something like this to the factory grill and call it a day.

For an f150, hard to beat a ranchhand bumper.

Road armour is very pricey.

I've been thinking about getting a cow catcher riot ram brush guard on my 4runner, lately.

Fab fours makes a good one. Herd bumpers are what all the big rigs run around here.

OP, check out ali-arc or something similar.  They are aluminum, and sacrificial, but don't add all the weight to the front of your truck for the 99% of the time you don't need the protection.  Less wear on front end parts and less of a hit on mpg.  See a lot of big rigs with them, for the same reasons.

Not supposed to do that due to the electric power steering.  Voids the warranty I think.  Anyway, the manual says don't.

Nice looking guards. Just hope the deer don't roll up and go over the hood. It occurred to me that
those guards looked Ferguson ready.

You don't want a grille/brush guard, you want a full replacement bumper with grille guard built in. F-150 bumpers crumple like a beer can when you hit a deer with one. My 2005 F-150 I hit a deer took out grille, bumper fascia, and headlight $5k, second deer just the bumper for $2500. It now has a ranch hand full replacement bumper and brush guard, last deer I hit didn't even scratch the powder coat. $0 in damage priceless

I've had a Ranch Hand on my truck for two years. Haven't had a deer jump in front of me yet. So I guess it's working pretty good on protecting my truck.

Deer or protester?

I have the Road Armor bumper/guard combo on my FJ and I love it.  I got lucky and bought my truck with it already installed, but after looking around at many other manufacturers, the RA bumper not only has the best front end coverage, but is also my favorite design-wise (on my particular truck).

The downsides are: expensive and heavy.  You may need heavier springs on the front to run a bumper that is several hundred pounds, but I don't know much about your truck's factory suspension.

As a side note, if you choose a steal bumper, I reccomend having it Line-X coated.  No rock chips, bugs are easily brushed off, no rust so far (2007 model).

I like that.  Ballpark price?  Can't seem to find it.  If its over 2k like the road armor....fugedaboutit.

You need something you can mount sharpened, foot-long pieces of rebar on.  So when the deer hits, it sticks tight and don't roll over the top.
It might work for protestors too.

I will also note, that I also hang out on some off road forums. Road Armor customer service has been lousy with some people waiting up to 6 months for their bumpers. They give government contracts priority and don't bother to tell you that you have to wait a year. Do an internet search and you should be able to find the complaints. They also bill you immediately. So buy with caution.

Edit: typing.

Ranch Hand.  I ran smooth the fuck over two whitetails with my Silverado 2500HD without any issues.  The assholes who stole that truck also ran through several barbed wire fences between Round Rock and Mexico.  The Ranch Hand brush guard handled it all!

You'll want it to collapse/crumple to some extent so that it absorbs energy from the hit, as opposed to just transferring that energy to the vehicle structure.

Fab fours. Just bought their pre runner setup for my Dodge. PCS custom automotive gave me a real good deal with freight included. That's normally the stupid expensive part.

I have a Road Rhino (NOT road armor) front and rear. It was $1,200 (front, rear, shipped). They ship it to you in pieces on a pallet. Weld it yourself kit. I welded it up, and had it powder coated. It came out really nice. I'm very happy with it.

Two weeks ago I had a mini van rear end me on I-5 south just before the J St. exit. It totaled his van. Only scratched my bumper. Zero real damage... I can't wait to hit a deer.

Yup, only one I found that actually protects the radiator. Most don't have any protection from large birds or a deer head getting into the grill itself.
