I realized this evening that I have no idea what I'm going to do. I'm a few statps away from graduation, and had an epiphany.

My best friend and I are going to join the Marines.

I wish I was able to just fucking go now, now I can't wait.

What career field should I look into? Any I should stay away from?

Stay away from anything that refers to "air controller." That is Hawk and Stinger missles. They are dead end MOS.

Go Armor, Artillery, or Infantry.

They all sounds really good. I like the sound of Armor though.

Congratulations and thank you!

I might also recommend Combat Engineer (is it the under the same name in the USMC?).  Crunches like infantry, but gets to play with explosives.

If you like explosions, do it.  I don't regret it one bit.

Go occ field 40 if you like computers, 46 if you like media or you want to see the entire Corps and all its operations, 59 if you want to learn digitial repair (not 63/64, they work 18 hour days), stay the heck away from 72 (as someone else said above, there are two really cool jobs in 72, and 3 sucky ones. The sucky ones are where just about everyone goes).

They will care of that at RTR , but he will NEED to be able to run 1.5 miles, do 3 dead hang pull-ups, and 40 crunches in 2 minutes BEFORE he arrives at MCRD or he very well may find himself spending some time in PTP.

20iner - Congratulations on a fine way to step into the next phase of your life.  Thank you for volunteering your service to our great country!

Oh-rah. Congrats and Good Luck.

I was a 6027. F/A-18 Jet Engine Mech.  Air Wing was OK, but if I had to do it over I woulda accepted their offer for Sniper Training.

thats awesome.  I always feel like joining the military when Sept 11 rolls around.. the combination of anger and patriotism set in, and I seriously just want to join the army or navy.

Good for you.  You'll never regret it and will always be proud of your service.  I can promise you that.

I am of two minds on OS, as an older guy who never had any adventure and can only look forward to 25 more years of office work, I would say go into the combat arms OS.  However, having seen how much what you do when you are young shapes your later career choices, I'd counsel you to look at practical post-military skills like computer, communications, etc.  Or be a lifer!

Perhaps the Engineer option is best?  Combine the two?

Thats it? My fastest mile time 5:15, I can handle the pull ups. And 40 crunches? Sounds easy enough.

Oh, and you're welcome to everyone for your thanks. It's really encouraging and I appreciate it a lot.

(These guys sort of aggravate me. Just as I begin to rant and rave that young people today are NFG, someone like this pops up!)

Best of luck to you!

Demand 0311 (Rifleman).
If the recruiter says no, find another recruiter.

Not tanks, not arty, nope.

Infantry.
If you're some kind of fucking genius, go mortars (still infantry).

That is the bare minimum. You need to be able to run three miles, 10 pull ups and 80 crunches or you will have a hard time. And it is PCP not PTP.

0311 = Marine Rifleman. The sole reason for every other MOS in the Marine Corps.

When do you plan on going to boot? If you're going this summer we may be in the same platoon.

Screw infantry (7 years of it). Go armor. Nothing like steel wrapping around your ass.
