TALLULAH, La. -- A 26-year-old Tallulah man lost his right hand while holding a homemade pipe bomb.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon on a private pond seven miles south of Tallulah, said Madison Parish Sheriff's Chief Deputy Sammy Byrd. The injured man was identified as Shane Hayes.

"A couple of guys went fishing and one of them had made some homemade explosives, sort of like a pipe bomb with a recipe he got off of the Internet," Byrd said. "When the fish weren't biting, he thought he would throw a bomb in the water, and it exploded in his hand."

Shane Hayes, 26, and his brother-in-law, Michael Bankston, Tallulah, were in a boat. The other man in the boat was Hayes' brother-in-law, Michael Bankston of Tallulah, authorities said.

When the pipe bomb exploded, Byrd said, Hayes went into shock and Bankston had to place a makeshift tourniquet on his arm.

"Bankston managed to put him in his truck and call 9-1-1. He drove him to (U.S.) 65 where the sheriff's office and ambulance were waiting."

Hayes was taken to River Region Hospital in Vicksburg, Miss., for treatment. Byrd said Hayes' hand had to be amputated and he had to have pipe fragments surgically removed from his thigh.

"Honestly, it was just an accident and they were just fooling around," Byrd said. "Both are good guys. He just built a big firecracker and it did not work out. He shouldn't have made them."
