No help to buy sex
By The Copenhagen Post

The Social Democrats criticise official guidelines that instruct health care workers to assist disabled people to contact prostitutes

The state promotes prostitution when disability institutions help their residents contact prostitutes, the Social Democrats said on Thursday.

The opposition party's MP and equal opportunities spokesman Kirsten Brosbøl criticised the Ministry of Social Affairs for instructing health care workers who assist disabled people to buy sex.

'We spend a lot of tax money on helping women out of prostitution. At the same time we officially encourage personnel to help disabled people contact prostitutes. It's extremely problematic that we support prostitution in this way, when we know that people are harmed by working as prostitutes,' Brosbøl said.

She said the Social Ministry guidelines from 2001, 'Sexuality - Regardless of Handicap', should be changed.

The ministry's guidelines state that 'sexual health is a basic human right' and in some cases instruct health workers to help disabled persons to contact a prostitute.

'The assisting person must in some cases escort the person to the prostitute. It can also be essential for the assisting person to talk to the prostitute, together with the person, to express requests and ensure that enough time is provided,' the ministry states in its guidelines.

Stig Langvad, chairman for the Confederation of Special Needs Organisations, said he disagreed with Brosbøl.

'My general opinion is that disabled people should have equal access to the same opportunities as everyone else in society,' he said. 'Since we have prostitution in Denmark, disabled people should get assistance when circumstances demand.'

Langvad said politicians should make up their minds about whether prostitution should exist at all before discussing whether only disabled people should be barred from buying sex.

He didn't. He just works here. I dont think he intends to become a citizen, but now that he married an American he can if he wants.

BTW, I like how the article describes the politicians as not being opposed to subsidizing hookers to the disabled on principle, just that it's wasteful to do so while having programs to discourage prostitution and rehabilitate prostitutes.

Prof's a legal resident alien, permanently allowed to stay and work.

He kept his Danish citizenship as the US or Denmark (can't remember) doesn't allow Dual-Citizenship, and it's his homeland.....

Regardless, he's certainly earned the right to do whatever the hell he pleases, I figure. He's a good guy.

Prof's a FAR cry from your average lawn-mower, sending all his money back to guatemala, etc and taking advantage of our country.

I watched a documentary about this once. They had this "social sexual workers" that go to handicapped and elderly asylums to have sex with the folks there...

Not a bad concept, but still icky.

It was a rhetorical question. We need a rhetorical smiley.

Like when you say,"WTF did I get married anyways?"

Maybe I'll use this:

Not a bad concept, if the taxpayers don't have to pay for it. I wouldn't care if prostitution was legalized, just not subsidized...
