Remember good ole Dan Baum, who wrote a story for Harper Magazine on concealed weapons - happyness was a worn gun, was in New Orleans for Katrina, had some article titled Nine Lives or something like that. He also is promoting a blog called our gun thing - gotta have key words, yah know, so search engines will pick them up....
Well, he had posted a question on here asking people who cached weapons to contact him so he could get information for a story he was writing..... You know, anonymously, like..... The general discussion thread was titled "caching weapons" here http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=1079916&page=1 There was another, shorter one, in the survival forum, which quickly got locked for him trolling. Dan Baum was most notable for 3. I really don't need any paranoid dickheads accusing me of being an ATF agent. You don't want to deal with me, fine. But hold off on the insults. Let's be gentlemen. when people started to question his motive on the first page. and then the thread took off..... as everybody started finding out he..... was the typical liberal fudd.... guns are okay for him, as long as he was using them to hunt or target shoot with.... concealed carry means you have to be a paranoid, hyper vigilent, watch everybody for the slightest wrong move (not his words.... well, only partially) person. People showed he didn't understand the 2nd amendment, and lied and distorted things in his articles. Generally, it didn't make Dan Baum look good...... Well, like any liberal does, when they don't like the way history portrays them, he has rewrote history.... Searching for the terms "dan baum caching weapons" only brings up the survivlal forum thread. In fact, the first search result is another blog talking about how dan baum was being taken apart in this forum.... The original thread.... never showed up.... Yahoo - only mentions of the dan baum bashing on ar15 showed up, in blogs that mentioned it. Bing - threads don't even show up..... So.... When things don't go the way you like them to go, like any other slimy liberal, he apparently requested the most common search engines................... to rewrite things like it didn't happen. And you, dan baum.... were wondering why people on this board didn't trust you..... So, if anybody happens on this thread.... beware of the things unethical, slimy, immoral, lying, things people like dan baum do. For, if they start rewriting history, what else will they do.... edit to take out the tin foil cap stuff i put here in jest cause some of you were taking it literally |

Not that I lilke the dude, I had fun showing how he grossly misunderstood the use of Justification and Operative clauses... But I think you give the guy too much credit. How exactly would Dan get a search engine do anything?

How exactly would Dan get a search engine do anything? Google bombing, but usually, thats a coordinated effort and the OP says this involves multiple search engines. Perhaps our thread is just too old? |

Maybe he didnt write it after all and it ended with the thread he got ripped apart on.
Loosen you tinfoil. |

He has special powers. It comes with the seer sucker jacket, straw hat, his trusty banjo, and ATF CREDENTIALS.

Well, ya all could try to do the searches yourself, if you don't believe me...
infact, the google search of "dan baum caching weapons" already shows this thread, but doesn't show one from august? and it has been shown that google has changed the number of search results return and what was return for articles when obama was campaigning for office.... alright... tried to hyperlink, but something is messed up and links not working... |
|
This could be repetitive –– Black Jack is helping me write.

Better than that. I'm on a MAC. And awaaaaay we go! |

So this guy somehow blocked his GD caching thread from showing up on all the popular search engines?
Is that the gist of the cool story? |
|
after talking to him, i can't imagine that he would rate that thread as even remotely important enough to warrant "censorship". i didn't post in that thread, but i did email him. told him that i was unsurprised at the reception that he got, but encouraged him to take advantage of the multiple offers he got to go shooting with some of the members. we wound up corresponding, and it turns out he's actually a really sharp guy. there are some things he believes that (of course) i think are wrong, but i'm actually impressed at the way he is working through this issue. we wound up doing a 90min phone interview regarding the preparedness mindset. another thing that impressed me was that he sent his interview notes for me to review, since he didn't want any on-record statement to be misconstrued or misunderstood. i strongly got the impression that he wants to give an honest account of the self-sufficiency position, rather than just shaping it in order to meet some sort of agenda. we're planning to do a formal, face-to-face interview sometime this fall. honestly, i think a lot of people would be surprised at his personal opinions. of course, this would require that people actually enter into a conversation with the man, rather than simply assuming. (p.s., note that "censorship" only occurs when a person in authority (you know...a censor) suppresses a statement. google bombing, even if it actually takes place, is not censorship.) |
|
they probably got removed if he complained that the thread had confidential information being revealed without his consent. the problem is, all the information that was there, was stuff that he had made available himself, on the internet. one was a picture of his family at the obama inaugeration , which led to some comments about his daughter and wife. there was some kind of address to contact him. and there was a callout comment to the pit that he took as a physical threat so, any combination of these, he could have used to get the thread removed edit - to add - the only way I knew something strange was going on was when i google searched the thread for some comments i remembered, and couldn't find it with google. things got stranger when the survival forum thread showed up, but the main one didn't, and it wouldn't show up in yahoo or bing. it does show up in mama.com, and probably other, less used ones though |
|
I just remembered everybody being an asshole to the guy.
Instead of showing differing viewpoints, everybody dropped all forms of decency and acted like a bunch of fucking teenagers |

If you listen to his interviews, he is surprised by the fact that reality did not match what the antigun crowd's perception of firearms was, however, he still goes on to support more gun control.... he also didn't do due diligence in researching information for his articles, and portrayed some information negatively, that I interpreted as to portray gwb in a bad light - look back in the original thread, where i posted about his article and the end of the awb. So, while he may be a firearms owner and user, i certainly would not trust him to not want to prevent you or anyone else from being able to own or use them if he could - listen to him talk about how the gun control crowd has not taken the inititive to be more proactive, etc. |

When I search "danbaum caching weapons" on Yahoo it pops up as the sixth link down. Hit the cached link on the search page and it takes you to GD, his topic is the 11th one down.

Oh look! A new article by Dan Baum!
Price of Valor (I think Dan Baum is trying to pass himself off as something he's not i.e. impartial, objective observer instead of a coy, deceptive little man with the 60's mindset) |

Ah, just the right thing to do to a decent and fair minded writer about guns who is published in one of the premier, genuinely Tier 1 American publication, and to gain good press for this website and for the type of rifle it is named after.
Being jumped on by a pack of certifiable paranoid mental cases (suspecting some sort of undercover policeman) , being ill treated on the specious principle of ideological purity. It's a dirty shame to think that he might write his next essay along the honest line that his belief in gun rights is diminished to a large extent by interacting with the sort of people who inspire anything between a little healthy anxiety and serious fear when imagined with all their guns. |

Your supposition is negated by his proclamation of undying love for the Obama Socialist Paradise machine. He admits his political leanings, which in itself, presupposes a dislike of individualist rights and personal liberties (at least for those who are obviously undeserving). While he pretends to see from the eyes of the other side, his opinions are just a regurgitated and repackaged, cosmopolitan view delivered in such a way to feign empathy for those of a lesser capacity (proverbial big city thinker) while still defending the original position of the left. Honesty is an interesting word to choose when his intent seems to be more of a deceptive one. |

Quoted: Quoted: Ah, just the right thing to do to a decent and fair minded writer about guns who is published in one of the premier, genuinely Tier 1 American publication decent and fair minded? and harpers isn't premier or tier anything Take a bit of time out of your busy day, and go to a large book store, and find the wall or the shelves where they keep periodicals. Take a look, and acquaint yourself with the number of different magazines. You'll some are just pornography, some are about cars, about boats perhaps, certainly a great many on fitness, a few on guns, an awful lot for women, and and equally awful lot for men, several about women's fashion, several about men's, a few about travel, perhaps one or two about knives or aviation, several on cooking, several on losing weight, really, almost any topic you could think of. Now, acquaint yourself with these magazines, and then, when you're done, take down a few of the better sort, the sort that the people who care about knowing and quality get at home, and purchase in airports when they travel. There are only a few in this august and rarefied company. The preeminent one is, as it long has been, the New Yorker, it's peer is the Economist, a notch below those two are Harper's and the Atlantic. You could probably include the Council on Foreign Relations' journal to be up there as well, except for the relative narrowness of it's scope. It's clear now that there are indeed tiers to the magazine world. Tier one, led by the New Yorker and the Economist at the paramount pinnacle, consists of those two, Harper's, the CFR, and the Atlantic. Second tier would be the better interest-specific magazines, mainly Conde Nast's stuff, and of course Vogue. Rolling Stone might make the cut, and the National Geographic society, belongs perhaps indeed to the top tier, nevertheless reigns over the science magazines. The third tear would be all the demographic minded gimmicky rubbish, don't you agree? |

All I remember was him asking a question for a book he was writing, giving some background on himself, and everybody jumping on his shit.

I just remembered everybody being an asshole to the guy. Instead of showing differing viewpoints, everybody dropped all forms of decency and acted like a bunch of fucking teenagers Ass fuckim. He deserved it, coming in here with a condescending attitude, talking down to us with his preconceived notions. And after a ton of members are rude, he calls them out on being dickheads, and gets in trouble for it. How about we try to educate people instead of scare them away? His post on the first page of his thread referred to members as paranoid dicks. Before anyone had given him any shit other than one person making an ATF joke He brought the shit storm on himself |

He was not interested in education. He was just looking for ammunition to fuel his hit job book to make us look like neanderthals. And we played right into his hands by acting like a bunch of closed minded hillbillies. That thread left a bad taste in my mouth But I guess it is GD after all 40% of the posts in the GD thread, maybe more, were challenges to learn more about the topic of discussion before taking a position, which had already been demonstrated in his blog and articles. There is absolutely no doubt that his motive was not pure journalism, and there is no doubt that he refused to avail himself of the offers to become educated beyond his extremely narrow knowledge and opinion about the gun culture. I will give him credit for having enough backbone to state his original reason and contact information. But he didn't have enough spine to follow up and take a chance on learning that his close held opinions might be wrong. Baum might not change his mind after the exposure, but so far there's no evidence that he is interested in trying. That's an important characteristic of the close minded. |
