The Bissel just took a crap on me and I need a new vacuum in the next week.  I have heard Dyson's are good, but they are pretty damn pricey and not sure if they are worth the money.  I vacuum pretty often since my neighbor has a bunch of fir trees that drop needles in my yard and then get tracked in.  I also have a dog and a cat that shed in the summer that  are an added headache.

So what says the hive?  Are Dyson's worth it or are there better vacuums to get?

Yes. Buy once, cry once. Ours broke down at year two, called Dyson. They had us send it in. Two weeks later we had a new one sent back. Free.

Do it.

Yes.  Ours is used 4 to 5 times a week.  Five cats produce a lot of fur.

Yes they are.  we bought the dison animal.  We have 2 Elkhounds that shed.   Ours is about 6 yrs old the beater bar froze up. I called Dison.  Their response, was since you have never called be fore we will send you a new beater bar and drive belt for it free of charge.  They also told me how to replace it and what little tricks to use to make the repair easy.

I hear great things about the Dyson, but I've never used it. For a more "Traditional" looking high-end powerful vacuum take a look at Riccar. Just got one for my mother and she's very impressed so far.

I'll be nice.

Anyway, we had a Dyson for a while and it was awesome.  We flooded during Hurricane Ike and when we went to replace it, I started looking for a cheaper alternative since I didn't feel we'd gotten our money out of the Dyson and didn't want to turn around and spend it again.

I wound up ordering this http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-Platinum-Lightweight-Canister-UH30010COM/dp/B001PB8EEM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1341377714&sr=8-3&keywords=hoover+vacuum and I like it just as much as the Dyson.  I especially like the 2-fer you get with the cannister vacuum as well.

Spend on the Dyson if you want to but if you're looking for just as good performance at a better price, I recommend this.

Absolutely! My mom has one that is at least 6 years old and it is still working great. I borrowed it to sell my wife on a dyson. I used her walmart hoover and vacuumed  the floor, then i used my moms 6+ year old dyson and i showed her the amount of fur and dirt it picked up AFTER the hoover had a turn we ordered on asap. And to clean the filters, you just rinse them off, let them dry then pop them back in. I would buy another one no problem. But i know won't have to for a LONG time... unless our new damn dog chews it up like she has everything else

When I bought my house a couple years ago I subscribed to Consumer Reports online, all of the top rated vacuums cost as much as or more than a dyson. I ended up buying a dyson since several people I know gave me favorable reviews. When mine was stolen in a burglary earlier this year, I bought another to replace it.

Going on 6 years.  Bought at the same time I got my Lab puppy.  The Animal really does work on the dog hair and toy debris.  DC16 IIRC.  Still going strong as day one.

Recommended.

No, but Miele is.

I've owned both.  I used my Miele behind the Dyson Pet version.  It picked up a ton of hair and dirt the Dyson just can't touch.

***

Where the main suction hose goes into the housing made the biggest difference in my second purchase.  Dyson sucks from the side.  You get uneven suction.  It's just that simple.

One pass with the Miele was the same as three from the Dyson.

I broke the foot throw on the Dyson several times as well.  Decent ideas sold through branding for about 10x the actual customer value.

Yes.  Mrs. FishKepr has been nagging me for YEARS about buying a Dyson and we finally ordered one about two weeks ago.

I can't believe the difference it makes over our old vacuum.

I have a dyson but would like a miele they are better they hold more and suck more but they also use bags so It's and added expense.  They have really nice stuff for those who can afford it. I've been to the show room in nj a few times for service school on the industrial lab washers. Very impressive company

Got one. Love it.

Got a bag caught in the beater bar and it locked it up.  Called Dyson, they said something to the effect of pushing the on/off button ten times and it will unlock.

That did it.

Good customer service.

We've had one for eight or so years now and definitely loved it for most of the time. Recently, the hose ripped off where it attaches to the handle. It doesn't seem to have the suction it used to either. Would like to replace it with another, just not sure if I want to fork over the money. We have the animal, but am interested in the ball if we get another Dyson.

Actually, the main reason we want a new vac is not because of the hose, but because after years of use, ours has a "smell" when you use it that makes the room stink. I've cleaned the filter, the underside, the tank and all the passages that come off, but it's still there. The only thing I haven't done is actually take apart the "cyclone" section or got into the motor.

Any ideas?

We also have there smaller hand-held rechargeable vac. We're kinda disappointed with that. I works fine, but you only have about 15min or so of use before it runs down.

Bissel and Dirt Devil suck ass..Hoover isn't far behind those 2. That's based on the number I saw come back to the stores as defective over the years.

To answer your question yes the Dysons are worth it, ours works so much better than anything else we've ever owned. We were smart and bought a refurbished unit that there was no sign that it was anything other than factory new.
