Download Spybot Search and Destroy. Do a search for it - it's free. Be sure to look at everytthing it finds on your hard drive before you delete it. Some spyware such as "Save" labeled things are required to work some programs such as Kazaa.

Erm my guess:
At some point you (or someone using that computer) was surfing porn sites and having to click a buncha popups away. One of the popups probably said something along the lines of 'We are changing your homepage to this site, if you dont want this to happen click 'no' below' viola new hompage, new links Porn it isnt just for breakfast anymore... |

I've used SpyBot and Ad-Aware. Both are good, but I'm currently using SpyBot. In fact, I just ran it.

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago. Our corporate firewall blocks all porn sites, but this stuff got through anyway. I still feel I picked it up on one of the gun forums I visited, but not sure which one (Glock, Sig, AR15,etc.) My IT group used AdAware and Spybot to attempt to eradicate the problem, but were unsuccessful. Hopefully you have greater success. If not, you will probably have to reinstall your OS in order to wipe out the registry entries that it is using to "resurrect" itself, a real pain in the butt. I never download unknown items nor give them permission to install. If I find out who did it, I would love to take legal action against them. I now run a trojan monitor at all times. If anything tries to "download" in the background, it notifies me immediately. Be careful what you "click" on, no matter where your surfing, including forums.

This is the exact reason I run my operating system on a C drive and archive all files on a D drive. If I get a virus or something like you experienced I simply format my C drive and reload Windows 2000. It only takes an hour or two to do so. I do it every couple months regardless.
Windows 2000 automatically sense and loads the drivers for most of my hardware. I use the default browser (I.E.) and email (Outlook) so those install with the 2000 install. With the quick systems we have nowdays loading your commonly used other software like MS Office and such is quick also. Everything else is left intact on the D drive. I don't like running antivirus or anti pop-up type programs because they sometimes interfere with your legitimate software functions. Just my opinion..... --RR |

A girl here at work somehow got a popup site that was porn from some info site. I know she wouldn't go to inappropriate sites from work. Well, every so often, a random porn site would come up.
She ended up having her machine reimaged. She called it an 'intermittant porn problem'. Bet that trouble ticket got some attention! |

Xupiter did that to my dads computer, probably from porn...but I dont wanna think about that...
I installed an Anti-Virus and it detected almost 14 viruses. I also went through the entire drive and deleted a crapload of folders and files it created. |

It was livegirls.com or some BS like that. Nuked em all with spyware adn ad-aware, but I came back after dinner to find my moniter full of pop-ups. Only open windows were AR15.com and the Washington Times. The only questionable files left anymore are Windows files, Eudora files, and camera and scanner files. DAMMIT!! Working on it.... |

I just had to clean a hijack on my comp that forwarded me to a porn/worthless search engine everytime I mistyped a website. I have found that HijackThis! works pretty well.
It will catch anyone that has tried to add something to your browser. Most of the time it is harmless like cookies, but this should be able to find the files that are imbedded. [url]http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/[/url] hth, tony |

After nothing else worked - the hijacker reinstalled itself - I rooted it out with Hijack This.
The xxx gave the windows registry item away. It is gone, and hasn't come back in 6 hours. This morning I must have had 20-30 pop-ups on my screen. |

I had my start page changed to offshore gambling stuff and porn pop-ups once. Had to go into the Registry to get it straight IIRC.
Then they tried to bill me $90 for some kind of shit that called out of my PC to a 900 number. I didn't pay, never heard any more from it. MM419 |
