Sorry if a dupe, but did anyone else watch this and end up disappointed? Picked it up at
Blockbuster after seeing all rave reviews about the film. One review said that the film was
every bit an accomplishment as Saving Private Ryan. Well, that certainly caught my attention.

Well I watched it last night and was sorely disappointed. While I'm a huge WW2 buff this film did
not uncover anything I didn't already know. On top of that, it film was never that engaging and the
story really felt dragged out. Besides, I've seen better documentaries on the History Channel on this same topic. No doubt that Spielberg would have done 10 times better had he been
the director. I saw reviews for this flim were averaging about 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. No way in hell.
I give it 2.

Anyone else watch it?

Now heres the big question.

Who gets to play Hitler?

Bruno Ganz is who played Hitler in this German made film.

If Spielberg made the film, I think Anthony Hopkins would make one hell of a Hitler.
That dude can act.

I haven't seen it yet, I've read reviews that it is supposed to be very good, and portrays the feeling of being in Berlin for the last days very well. I hear the uniforms and art direction (ie the sets, etc) are top notch and very accurate.....

However if Spielberg would've done it, all the Germans would have Russian style conscript hair cuts and would make stupid tactical mistakes....

I thought "Downfall" was the most historically accurate film I've seen.

It was fantastic.

Did you guys ever see the movie where all the head SS's guys are sitting around a table in a beautiful cabin and talking about the "final solution".

It was kinda slow but very interesting.

Anyone know the name?

"Downfall" was excellent. Bruno Ganz did a fantastic job as Hitler, and the other top Nazis were very good. The director took a great risk in their portrayals of the Nazis, and it paid off. The Germans, including Hitler, are portrayed as humans, not raving caricatures in an over the top way. That does NOT mean the Nazis weren't evil, or that they weren't show that way in the movie; often they're very chilling, as when Hitler or Goebells are talking about the failure of the German people and the need for them to be exterminated. But Hitler can at times also be charming in his dealings with others.

Highly recommended. The action scenes (filmed in St Petersburg, ironically) are OK, but nothing to write home about.

Alec Guiness played Hitler in the Bunker. Correction, Hitler the last 10 days. My bad.
