Which is the least worse of the three for wireless routers? Linksys is out of the question because I don't have the coin right now. |
My linksys works great. It has wireless B/G and has 4 ports for 10/100 :)
Would probably go Netgear shown you can't/don't want a LinkSys.
D-Link is ok, I never did have that good of luck with their early wireless products. |
I vote Linksys, but out of the three you picked, Netgears seem to have the least problems.
Stay away from anything with the name Belkin on it, avoid it like the plague. |
None of the above; Buffalo has been bedda bedda good to me.
Very easy to set up and hardly goes down. |
I'd avoid D-Link gear. I bought a friend a wireless router and suggested he patch the firmware on it. Damn thing locks up half way through the patch.
One call into D-Link and it turns out this is a known issue, yet they don't cover it under warranty. |
U.S. Robotics, if you know what your doing. Love mine. 125Mbps.

A lot of people will go into a computer store and ask for a 'Linksys Router"... almost like an 'Intel Computer"... that's how popular they are.
Either shop around til you find an affordable Linksys setup... or maybe someone here has a used one to sell. ( ifound a used linksys at a Goodwill thrift store for $1. Runs fine. Along with my IBM Thinkpad (1.2 gHz +256MB w/ XP Pro and Office XP) for $50. Be resourcefull and look around. |
Staples and bestbuy seem to have sales often on linksys products
Linksys is the worst and their customer service is even worse, I have a wireless good to 20 feet if there is no wall nearby, linksys has been completely useless in trying to solve the lack of range and poor signal.
RMA return to the company. They can't help you on the phone because they can't see the thing, and no wireless router ever made has a range of less then 20ft and that's even pushing it for blue tooth
I installed a belkin wireless router for a customer the other day. It seems to work quite well for the money. Dirt cheap and gets the job done. My personal preference is d-link or linksys.
Linksys is owned by Cisco. But the products are night and day diffrence. |
Yep, and so is the price. Of course, a SonicWALL blows any cisco firewall/router product out of the water. The people at SonicWALL have forgotten more about firewalls and routers then the people at Cisco will ever know. |

Check the team forum |

Don't expect much in the way of customer support from SonicWall though. I think WatchGuard boxes are a bit more robust than SonicWall. |

I have a D-link 624 wireless router. What a POS! It reboots it self ever 5 mins or so and kicks me off line. I'm on the 2nd one from D-link, and the replacement does the same thing. Just google dlink router problems. I've tried to get a 3rd one but they keep telling me to try it a little longer it might work. I've unpluged it snice I was using it at work and you can't run a network that shuts down ever 5 mins. I had a non wireless d-link router that works great. But after buying the 624, I will never buy a Dlink again.
I am running a linksys at home and have had 0 problems. |
I use Dlink wireless now and have never had any problems with it. I have used Netgear in the past and never had any problems with it either. I have no experiance with any other brands.
I had a Dlink before I replaced it with a linksys g with sppedbooster. Why did I replace it? because I got the linksys nib for 25 bucks. I can't tell the difference betwwen the 2 and the range seems to be the same. I think they all work the same and just get the cheapest one.
Netgear here with zero complaints. Very good instructions and works very well.
Netgear works well.
You can usually find some good deals on Buffalo Technolgy routers also, I've found them to be very good. |
I have gone through lot's of LinkSys stuff, I am now using a Motorola at my house and a Belkin at my apt. The Belkin was $39.99 at wallys.

I have never compared all three side by side, but i know my Dlink router and wireless cards work well. One thing i can say is that DLink's tech support has been great the few times i have called.
Netgear, & if it doesn't say "SPI" ( statefull packet inspection) don't waste your time 'cause it's not a real firewall.
You could always ugrade to SRX... |

Not for that money, they are to proud of that shit and it does no better or have a warranty worth shit. Besides cisco treats their employees like shit and dont deserve any of my cash. I have used Belkin, they are ok but tech support sucks. Dlink is by far the best deal, I have not used a 600 series as the post mentions the reboot issue but from what I have worked on the latest firmware upgrade corrected that issue. Transmit range and link quality are the same tested many times over. Dlink I can add and external antenna no problem. Linksys antenna converters to an external antenna are very hard to find and not worth the effort and have you seen the replacement antennas they now try and sell..50 bucks !! are you friggin insane I can buy two DLinks for that price...Besides if you put good antennas on the over priced piece in the first place the little guy would not have to pay more money for what should be in the first place. I have a D524 that you can still buy onsale for 20 bucks, great deal and good support even on weekends !! Plus the folks are in Ca not friggin india !! Get a clue john chambers !! |

Out of the three, go with the netgear. I've used all three, and prefer the netgear by far.
I hate belkin and EVERYTHING belkin makes is HORRIBLY overpriced. (Routers are just about the only thing that I've seen in a 'reasonable' price point, after rebate.) But if you go to CompUSA and see their Belkin cables- it's like $20 for about 5 cents worth of cable (if you make it yourself) or about $3 (at MOST) retail from any place selling cable at a decent price. I can remember someone once posted a cupon for 50% off anything at belkins store, and after looking around I thought everything was STILL overpriced. |
Smartnet contracts are your friend. It's not marketed or intended for residential customers.
The dozen or so employees I know personally don't agree with you.
Have you actually ever called TAC? Worst you're likely to get is a heavy Austrailian accent and a guy who keeps saying "No worries, mate" when the call center switches to the land down under at night. When I call TAC with a P1 case, they drop everything and start troubleshooting immediately. I reguarly get 1 hour callbacks on P3 issues. They've put me on the phone with IP-IVR developers. Try that with D-Link. You're comparing apples to oranges. |

I only recently recently started using wireless networks. The US Robotics keeps locking up every few days. The 3COM doesn''t always link up either. I will not use anything wireless for mission critical needs.
Make sure you dont' have any wireless phones working in the same frequencies. Had that problem till I relized that the phones operated in the same range as the routers. |
I have a cordless 5ghz phone. When I say lock up, I mean the computers plugged into the router ports also get shut off the network. Right now I have 7 computers in the house and 4-5 of them are going into a business I'm opening soon. There is no way I'll consider wireless for important stuff based on what I've seen so far.
For high availability and scability options, nothing beats Cisco. SubnetMask made that point clear. I've used D-Link, Netgear, Linksys, and 3Com. The cisco is the only original equipment I still have that operates properly. The other stuff is junk. 3Com in particular. I had to send a 1 Gigabit switch back 4 times for service and it still doesn't work. |
Just get a D-Link DI624 and put the latest firmware on it. I have run one for a long time now w/o any problems at 108mbps. I also use a D-Link card on my beater Arfcom surfing laptop by the lazyboy. I have tried Buffalo, what a bunch of crap, never could get that setup to work. Netgear is good and Linksys is over priced.
Be sure to watch the weekly sales at Best Buy, Comp USA, Circuit City, etc......you can usually p/u a brand product 802.11g router for around $20 to $30 after rebates. Same with the card. ETA....if you need inexpensive cables for anything go to SFCable. |
There are no apples and oranges, there is only blue coolaid and its not sweet !! |

I am running the newsest frameware for my d-link 624, and it still rebooted. They sent me a beta frameware (ver 2.71) and it doesn't reboot as much (twice a day) but still does.
Gary, see above about cordless phones-if your cordless runs the same freq, that will happen. Nick |
don't have any 2.4 phones, and my linksys works fine plug in at the same spot
In my experience, any Belkin product more complicated than a cable is absolute garbage. Their cables are excellent, however.
I talked to Scott there and he said someone pulled a case out and it was rung up as 500 rnds and he said it wont happen again..
Good thing I didnt drive out there. Its 500 rnds for 65.. I can get it for 85 for 1K at the last show in Mesquite. |
