DC Has the Wall, Chicago Has the Ceiling
Above & Beyond, is the permanent ceiling memorial hanging in the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum, Chicago, Illinois. Above & Beyond is an immense 10 X 40 foot sculpture that is comprised of military dog tags imprinted with the name, branch of service and casualty date of the 58,226 Americans killed in the Vietnam War. The tags are hung on metal wires from the museum's second floor atrium ceiling. The dog tags descend in the exact chronological order in which the soldier fell, beginning with the first American casualty in 1957 and ending with the last in 1975.
The not-for-profit National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum houses over 800 works of fine art by more than 150 artists. The museum's mission is to collect and preserve the artwork of the Vietnam soldier, including North and South Vietnamese, South Korean, New Zealand, Philippine, Nationalist Chinese, Australian, Thai, and American combatants. The NVVAM's art collection offers real insights into the Vietnam War specifically, and all wars in general.
