Cuban Woman Flies In Crate From Bahamas To Miami

POSTED: 3:30 pm EDT August 25, 2004

MIAMI -- A Cuban woman is in good condition Wednesday after flying inside a wooden crate that was loaded in a cargo plane from the Bahamas to Miami.

A DHL cargo crew found the woman curled up inside the crate as big as a small filing cabinet after workers unloaded it at Miami International Airport.

The woman in her early 20s did not require medical treatment. An immigration spokeswoman said she is to be released after standard processing.
A third-party contractor flies the 180-mile route from the Bahamas to Miami for DHL.

Federal officials and DHL released no information on how long the woman was in the Bahamas and whether she flew out of Cuba in the crate as well. Federal prosecutors have no comment.

I believe that under Federal Law, any Cubans (except Elian Gonzales) who reach US soil are entitled to stay.

Very creative!

I think they are technically refugees, so yes, they are allowed to stay.

But I think the catch is they must reach US Soil on their own accord. Elian did not. He got picked up by some fishermen and they brought him in.
