A Riverdale man was arrested in the District early yesterday after he stole a Greenbelt police car with a police dog in the back seat and took it on a high-speed joy ride, police said.

Lawrence Kennedy, 39, a patient at Prince George's Hospital Center, jumped into the car while it was parked at the hospital and took off about 3 a.m., said Greenbelt police spokesman George Mathews. The dog, a German shepherd named Tony, was in the back seat, waiting for his handler to finish some paperwork.

Greenbelt police followed the car into the District, where D.C. police joined the pursuit. Kennedy fled the car at 14th and N streets NW and was arrested about a block away, Mathews said.

Kennedy was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle in the District; he is awaiting extradition to Greenbelt.

Kennedy was not injured, the car was not damaged and a veterinarian said Tony was unharmed, though the dog was a bit shaken by the chase, Mathews said.

Don't forget cruelty to animal.
